Scores and latest updates including Burnley vs Newcastle United

Vincent Kompany insists he will not “overthink” the end of the season as Burnley continue their fight for Premier League safety with the visit of Newcastle today. Burnley’s recent upturn in form has propelled them to within two points of safety, with their latest impressive performance earning a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend. The 19th-placed Clarets have struggled on their own patch for much of the campaign but, since their 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth at the start of March, they have gone unbeaten in their last three at Turf Moor. Newcastle have scored nine goals in their last three games but Burnley boss Kompany says there is no reason to change things with three matches to go. He said: “You have to respect their attacking capabilities but at the same time it’s Saturday at Turf Moor. It’s a different day, different opponent, anything can happen, that’s the mindset and we’ve played good players all season so why start to overthink it now? If they are better than us well done, …

Man charged over tragedy chanting at Man Utd v Burnley match | England

A football fan has been charged with causing harassment, alarm or distress over alleged tragedy chanting during a Premier League match between Manchester United and Burnley. Burnley FC said it was informed about “offensive footage” on social media from some of its travelling supporters at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon. Greater Manchester police said it had charged Nathan Rawlinson, 44, of Bacup, Lancashire, with section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 and that he had been bailed. The force said: “As we have enforced recently, continued incidents of tragedy chanting by anyone will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly.” It warned members of the public not to share videos of the chant on social media as Rawlinson would attend court at a later date. On Saturday, Burnley released a club statement on X, saying: “We are aware of offensive footage currently circulating on social media from the away end of today’s fixture at Old Trafford. “Tragedy-related gesturing and chanting is completely unacceptable, and Burnley football club take a zero-tolerance approach. “We …

Late penalty gives relegation-threatened Burnley draw with Man United

MANCHESTER, England :Manchester United could muster only a point against Burnley on Saturday after substitute Zeki Amdouni scored a late penalty to rescue a 1-1 Premier League draw for the relegation-threatened side. Burnley’s 87th-minute penalty, awarded after goalkeeper Andre Onana fouled Amdouni in the box, cancelled out a late strike by Antony and leaves Erik ten Hag’s team sixth in the standings. The draw was a blow to United’s hopes of a European qualifying spot, as they sit six points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have two games in hand. “That is the facts,” Ten Hag told the BBC. “We needed to win. The past few weeks we’ve got in winning positions and then given it away. The gap is too big in this phase of the season. “Over many phases of the game we did very good (but) we gave it away again at the end,” the Dutchman added. “We have to look in the mirror. We made a mistake, but you take responsibility and they should understand what it means for a team …

Scores and latest updates including Man Utd vs Burnley

By Reuters Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag will have Mason Mount back for this afternoon’s Premier League game against Burnley and is hopeful Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial and Lisandro Martinez will return before the season’s end. Mount, who has started just seven matches this season across all competitions, had just returned from a three-month injury layoff when he suffered a setback in United’s FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry City last Sunday. Their 4-2 win over Sheffield United on Wednesday has Ten Hag’s men sixth in the standings, seven points behind Tottenham Hotspur who have a game in hand, and so the manager could use all the reinforcements he can get. “I think we are going to see those three this season,” Ten Hag said of Shaw, Martial and Martinez. “All three returned to the pitch. Next week they have to step into team training but next week, they can step in for the last weeks. They progress well.” United’s defending has been an issue all season due to injuries, with the side conceding …

Chris Wilder accuses Sheffield United players of giving up after Burnley humiliation

Chris Wilder accused his Sheffield United players of giving up after Burnley turned the battle of the Premier League’s bottom two into a Bramall Lane stroll. The Blades manager, who admitted afterwards his battered side are effectively relegated, took issue with their resolve after another humiliating 4-1 home defeat. Hollowed out by a harrowing season, they played like dead men walking. “I won’t name names but there were a few players out there who wanted to get out there when the fourth went in. I can’t accept that,” said Wilder. “When they smelt blood and were big enough to go for it, we went under. There has been a catalogue of really poor goals during the season. At the moment, there is pain going through pain in every department of the football club – especially the supporters. But we can’t turn it in.” The boos from those that remained at the final whistle reinforced Wilder’s observations. By then thousands of supporters had already streamed out. It was hard to blame them – a fan can …

Burnley raise survival hopes with 4-1 win at bottom side Sheffield United

SHEFFIELD :Burnley scored twice within three minutes in the first half and thwarted a second half comeback attempt by bottom side Sheffield United to boost their own Premier League survival hopes with a 4-1 win on Saturday. Burnley, 19th, moved to 23 points from 34 matches, three below 17th-placed Nottingham Forest who have a game in hand and visit 16th-placed Everton on Sunday. United, winless since February, have 16 points after 33 games. “It sums up our season… we should have been two or three up. Then all of a sudden in a heartbeat we are two down,” United manager Chris Wilder told Sky Sports. “The league is too powerful. Unfortunately you get exposed.” Jacob Bruun Larsen put the visitors ahead in the 38th minute when Wilson Odobert’s attempt hit a defender and fell to him on the edge of the box. His shot took a deflection from Jayden Bogle before rolling past keeper Ivo Grbic. Poor defending cost United again as Burnley immediately doubled their lead, with Lorenz Assignon dribbling past Ben Brereton Diaz …

Stuttering Chelsea held 2-2 at home by 10-man Burnley

Stuttering Chelsea held 2-2 at home by 10-man Burnley

LONDON :Chelsea suffered yet another setback in their erratic season when they were held to a 2-2 home draw on Saturday by 10-man, relegation-threatened Burnley who almost claimed all three points in the dying moments. Mauricio Pochettino’s expensively assembled but young side looked in the driving seat when Burnley’s Lorenz Assignon was shown a second yellow card for tangling with Mykhailo Mudryk and top scorer Cole Palmer netted the penalty in the 44th minute. Burnley manager Vincent Kompany was also shown a red card for protesting against the spot-kick decision. But Clarets’ captain Josh Cullen stunned Stamford Bridge by scoring two minutes into the second half with a shot off the outside of his boot from 20 metres. Chelsea struggled to make their numerical advantage count before they restored their lead in the 78th when Palmer netted again, this time with a low shot after collecting a neat back-heeled pass from substitute Raheem Sterling. Burnley refused to give up though and were level again three minutes later when Dara O’Shea’s powerful header from a corner …
