Kay Burley left red-faced with ‘outrageous’ call for Jewish man to avoid areas of London | UK | News

A Jewish anti-semitism campaigner has called a line of questioning from Sky News presenter Kay Burley “outrageous” as they discussed how police stopped him crossing the road during a pro-Palestine march. There has been public outcry, and even an intervention from the Prime Minister, over exchanges between Gideon Falter, chief executive of the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA), and Met Police officers during the protest central London on April 13. In a video from the day, Mr Falter, who was wearing a Jewish head covering known as a kippah, was described as “openly Jewish” by one officer as he was stopped from crossing the road during the Gaza procession. Mr Falter was also told he could be arrested for a “breach of peace” and that his presence was “antagonising”. The Metropolitan Police have since apologised to Mr Falter for his treatment. But discussing the incident on Sky News with veteran broadcaster Kay Burley, Mr Falter took exemption to an example she used that a “black newspaper analyst” who had appeared on the channel earlier, said they …

Kay Burley Confronts Minister On Mark Menzies Saga

Kay Burley Confronts Minister On Mark Menzies Saga

Kay Burley cornered a minister over the Conservatives’ handling of the saga around former Tory Mark Menzies in an awkward Sky News clash on Monday. Menzies resigned from the party on Sunday and announced he would not be standing at the next general election, days after allegations he had misused campaign funds emerged. He denied all claims against him. A Tory Party investigation found he had not misused funds because he had taken money from a group outside of the main Conservative remit. However, the Sky News presenter still pressed foreign minister Andrew Mitchell over the messy incident. Burley asked: “What most offended you about [Mark Menzies]′ actions? “Was it the misuse of funds, was it his questionable behaviour over many years or was it [him] asking a member of his team to go to a potential crime scene, with a bag load of cash, where she was already told, ‘bad men are inside’?” Mitchell replied: “I’ve been in Washington until yesterday doing my job as the minister for international development.” Burley refused to take …

Kay Burley Clashes With Grant Shapps Over Tory Sleaze

#KayBurley: 8 independent MPs, former Tories… what’s that saying about your party & the state of British politics? Grant Shapps: I thought I was on to talk about 2 wars KB: Do you think it’s funny… what should people be thinking about the Tory Party before the next GE? pic.twitter.com/an22G2X2fU — Haggis_UK ???????? ???????? (@Haggis_UK) April 18, 2024 The Sky News presenter grilled the defence secretary after Mark Menzies became the latest Conservative MP to lose the party whip. He is accused of using Tory campaign funds to pay off “bad people” he claimed had locked him in a flat, as well as for medical bills. Menzies, the MP for Flyde in Lancashire, denies the allegations but has agreed to “relinquish” the Tory whip while the party investigates the claims, which were first reported by The Times. As Burley grilled Shapps on the claims, he said: “I thought I was coming on to talk about the situation in Iran and the Middle East.” Burley replied: “We’ll come to that, Mr Shapps. In the next door …

Kay Burley And Ed Balls Leave Minister Flailing Live On Air Over Inflation

Kay Burley And Ed Balls Leave Minister Flailing Live On Air Over Inflation

A minister floundered in two separate interviews this morning when TV presenters called her out for her comments around inflation. The Office for National Statistics announced that inflation had fallen to 3.2% on Wednesday, the lowest rates seen in the UK since the cost of living crisis began in 2021. The government has widely taken responsibility for this decline – but, it’s actually up to the independent Bank of England to manage the country’s inflation rates. The government just sets the inflation target rate of 2%. Even so, the chief secretary to the Treasury, Laura Trott, told Sky News this morning the recent drop in inflation “hasn’t happened by accident”. She continued: “When the prime minister took over, inflation was at 11%, food was at nearly 20%, that was so difficult for everyone at home. “But because of the action we’ve taken, alongside the Bank of England, which has been praised by the IMF and the OBR has been very clear that the actions we’ve taken this year in the Budget have been deflationary, it’s …

Kay Burley Puts Minister In Hot Seat Over Lee Anderson Remarks

Kay Burley Puts Minister In Hot Seat Over Lee Anderson Remarks

Sky News’ Kay Burley cornered the transport secretary over Lee Anderson’s attack on Sadiq Khan, which led to his suspension from the Conservative Party. Mark Harper repeatedly refused to describe his former Tory colleague’s remarks as “racist”, and would only go as far as calling the comments “wrong” in a tense interview on Monday. Anderson triggered a major backlash after he said Khan, the London mayor who is also Muslim, had “given out capital city away to his mates”. The former Tory deputy chairman claimed “Islamists” have “got control of Khan and they’ve got control of London”. Anderson then refused to apologise for the remarks, at which point he was kicked out of the Conservative Party. Speaking to Sky News on Monday morning, Harper said he hopes Anderson will reflect, retract his comments and apologise. He claimed Khan had a “terrible” record “on everything, frankly”. “We don’t have to make anything up about Sadiq Khan. His record is terrible,” he added. But, pressing Harper about Anderson’s words, Burley said: “You say it was wrong, was …

Kay Burley Grills Andrea Leadsom On Brexit Border Checks

Kay Burley Grills Andrea Leadsom On Brexit Border Checks

A Tory minister was left squirming over the extra costs being suffered by small businesses because of post-Brexit border checks. From today, new arrangements as a result of the UK leaving the EU will impact the import of plants, animals and food from the continent. Many companies say the extra checks will massively increase their costs and put their long-term sustainability at risk. On Sky News this morning, health minister Andrea Leadsom – a prominent Brexiteer during the 2016 referendum – was grilled on the changes by Kay Burley. She gave the example of a florist who can’t afford to buy flowers from Holland any more. The presenter told her: “I thought Brexit was done? So what’s happening?” Leadsom replied: “You mean the plant checks? One of the points about leaving the single market is there is increased checks at the borders because you’re not in the single market. That’s absolutely known about ever since 2016 when the decision to leave the EU was made. “But the point is that since leaving the EU, the …

Government Minister Finally Interviewed By Kay Burley After U-Turn

Government Minister Finally Interviewed By Kay Burley After U-Turn

A government minister has finally been interviewed by Kay Burley for the first time in a week. In an apparent U-turn, Lee Rowley was put up by Downing Street to face the Sky News presenter. He was the first Tory frontbencher to do so since Huw Merriman’s car crash interview with Burley last Tuesday. The transport minister was mocked after he said satirical Radio Four show The News Quiz showed that the BBC is biased. HuffPost UK revealed yesterday how, in a highly unusual move, ministers had been blocked from facing Burley since Merriman’s nightmare performance. Before today, the last time a government representative had appeared on Sky’s breakfast show had been last Friday – Burley’s day off. And yesterday, while health secretary Victoria Atkins was interviewed on a range of TV and radio broadcasters, she was not on Sky News. A No10 source insisted there was nothing unusual about the arrangement, telling HuffPost UK that morning broadcast interview rounds are alternated on a daily and weekly basis. However, asked directly whether ministers have been …

Kay Burley Strikes Fear In Tory Ministers

Kay Burley Strikes Fear In Tory Ministers

It is an early-morning ordeal that comes with the job of being a senior MP. Almost every day from Monday to Friday, a Tory and Labour frontbencher is put up to do a round of interviews on breakfast TV and radio. For the broadcasters, it is an opportunity to ask the UK’s top politicians about the major issues of the day. But for the MPs themselves, it is a political high-wire act. When it goes well, they can shape that day’s news agenda. But when it goes badly, it can leave their party – or the government – on the back foot for the rest of the day. Last week, culture secretary Lucy Frazer and transport minister Huw Merriman endured two excruciating ordeals while being interviewed by Kay Burley on Sky News. And since then, no minister has appeared on the channel’s breakfast show while Burley has been on duty. On Monday, Frazer was left flummoxed when Burley asked her for examples of BBC bias after the government launched another crackdown on the corporation. The …

Culture Secretary Skewered By Kay Burley Over Alleged BBC Bias

Culture Secretary Skewered By Kay Burley Over Alleged BBC Bias

Lucy Frazer ended up in a couple of sticky situations over her personal thoughts around alleged BBC bias on Monday. The culture secretary was doing the morning media rounds to announce the publication of her mid-term review into the BBC, including changes intended to boost confidence around its impartiality. But, Sky News’ Kay Burley was more focused on the accusations that the BBC is bias, and asked the cabinet minister what she thought about the broadcaster. Frazer replied: “Well, what I’ve looked at is the evidence, the evidence from Ofcom – 39% of complaints last year were in relation to impartiality, but the year before it was 19%.” “Perception isn’t necessarily reality,” Burley pointed out. “There are only perceptions,” Frazer said. “Perceptions are important. What’s important about the BBC is that it is funded by the public. Perceptions of the BBC by the public are important.” She added while people think the BBC is accurate, it’s not seen as impartial. “Do you think the BBC is bias?” Burley asked again. “I’m looking at this from …
