Nebraska legislators buck Trump by blocking Electoral College vote change — for now

[ad_1] Nebraska legislators on Wednesday night blocked a late effort to change how the state allocates its Electoral College votes, despite public pressure from former President Donald Trump to shift to a winner-take-all system that would likely benefit him in the fall. The measure fell short, 8-36, in a procedural vote. While it’s possible supporters could take another stab at advancing the proposal, there remain serious hurdles as the legislative session draws to a close, and it’s unclear whether the proposal has enough support to get across the finish line and become law. Nebraska currently doles out three of its five electoral votes to the presidential candidate who wins each of its three congressional districts. In practice, that puts the competitive 2nd District in the Omaha area in play, even though Republicans typically win the statewide vote easily. Wednesday night’s failed attempt to change the law to award all the state’s Electoral College votes to the statewide winner leaves the fate of the proposal in doubt with a few days left in the legislative session. …

Ken Buck slams ‘ridiculous’ claims he’s resigning to hurt Boebert’s election chances

[ad_1] Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) slammed the claims that he’s resigning from Congress to hinder Rep. Lauren Boebert’s (R-Colo.) chances of claiming his 4th Congressional District seat.  Buck initially announced last year that he would not be running for reelection. He announced his early retirement from Congress on Tuesday, triggering a special election to fill his spot. Boebert characterized Buck’s decision as “weak sauce,” calling it a “gift to the Uniparty.”   “The establishment concocted a swampy backroom deal to try to rig an election I’m winning by 25 points,” she said in comments earlier this week. Buck fired back on Thursday, telling the Colorado Sun “it’s ridiculous” to say his early resignation is intended to make it tougher for Boebert to get elected after she switched to run in his district. Buck also said he is not “giving anybody an advantage or disadvantage” in his district’s race.  “I have done my very best to stay out of this primary election,” he told the Colorado news outlet. Buck also explained his decision to announce an early …

GOP Rep. Ken Buck Says the Republican Party Has Become a Joke and He’s Getting the F–k Out

GOP Rep. Ken Buck Says the Republican Party Has Become a Joke and He’s Getting the F–k Out

[ad_1] Republican lawmaker Ken Buck announced last November that he would not seek reelection and would leave Congress at the end of the year. But apparently his GOP colleagues have become so intolerable that he’s decided he can’t waste another second of his life in Washington and is getting out of there just as soon as he can pack up his office. On Tuesday, Buck said he would leave Congress at the end of next week rather than stick out the remaining time on his term. While the Colorado representative kept things cordial in his official statement, he let it be known how he really feels in interviews with reporters. Speaking to CNN’s Dana Bash about dysfunction on Capitol Hill, Buck said, “It is the worst year of the nine years and three months that I’ve been in Congress and having talked to former members, it’s the worst year in 40, 50 years to be in Congress.… This place has just devolved into this bickering and nonsense and not really doing the job for the American people.” …

Relatively Sane-Seeming Republican Ken Buck Now Demanding Kamala Harris Boot Biden From Office via 25th Amendment

[ad_1] While Ken Buck may have absolutely abhorrent views on abortion, gun control, LGBTQ+ people, and climate change, the GOP lawmaker has said and done a number of things over the last several years that could lead one to believe he was relatively sane compared to his Republican brethren. Things like: Declaring in January 2021 that Congress did not have the power to contest the results of the 2020 election; voting against the effort to remove Liz Cheney from her leadership position for challenging Donald Trump; shaming his colleagues for claiming the election was stolen; calling on Trump to tell his supporters that violence of any kind will not be tolerated; admitting the GOP had no actual basis for impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas; opposing the push to impeach Joe Biden; publicly stating he is “embarrassed” and “ashamed” of his colleagues for withholding funding for Ukraine to fight Russia. But now, it unfortunately appears as though Buck—who announced last year he will not seek reelection—is edging closer to the party’s extremists, if his calls …

The case of Carrie Buck and the Supreme Court’s century-old crusade to control women

The case of Carrie Buck and the Supreme Court’s century-old crusade to control women

[ad_1] I’d like to take Alabama’s Chief Justice Tom Parker out for coffee and talk to him about his recent claim that frozen embryos are children, too.  Alabama’s Supreme Court recently and wrongly ruled embryos – in or out of the uterus – are children, and that destroying them is “an affront to God.”  I’d share with Justice Parker the trauma and expense my own daughter and her husband endured in their efforts to have children. I’d tell him how my daughter had four embryos implanted, yet, she only has two children. I’d explain in the simplest terms possible how it is that every month women all over the world slough off embryos that do not implant. I’d explain how my daughter sloughed off embryos that were surgically implanted at $30,000 a pop. I’d share with him how these sloughed-off embryos are then flushed down the toilet along with urine and the remains of menstrual flow because clearly Parker and the rest of the Alabama Supreme Court have no idea how a woman’s body functions, …

News Corp and New York Times use subscriptions to buck trend

[ad_1] Robert Thomson. Picture: News UK News Corp and the New York Times have both reported strong subscriptions growth and are bucking the trend of news businesses reporting revenue decline. Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp marked a milestone as digital reached 52% of all revenues, with chief executive Robert Thomson describing this as “more than an e-evolution, it is an e-revolution”. Thomson told investors: “For the second quarter in succession, News Corp has achieved growth in both revenue and profitability, and we believe there are strong prospects for further growth as difficult, inauspicious macro conditions ease in some of our markets.” Thousands of journalist jobs were cut in the UK and US in the past year. News Corp said in February 2023 it would seek to cut 5% of its global workforce, or around 1,250 positions, over the subsequent year. Thomson also revealed News Corp is in “advanced” negotiations with generative AI companies and that The Times will “imminently” launch a digital version in the US. Thanks for subscribing. Oscars: Popularity doesn’t mean awards success like it used to – can Barbie or Oppenheimer buck the trend? | Ents & Arts News

[ad_1] In recent years superhero, fantasy and animation have dominated the movie box office, making billions of pounds for franchises like Marvel and Star Wars. But their runaway success hasn’t been matched with top awards at the Oscars. But Barbie and Oppenheimer could, at this year’s awards, break that trend. Going back to the 1980s and 1990s, the trend had been that box office hits were often rewarded with Academy Award nods, as shown by our analysis of historic box office data and the Academy Awards Database. Read more: Oppenheimer leads Oscar nominations – with big nods for Barbie too But since the turn of the century – apart from The Lord Of The Rings’s enormous success in 2004 – the films that made the most money have had very little success in gaining nominations. Looking at the top 10 highest grossing films for each year since 1977, a very small proportion these days go on to be nominated for best picture, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress and best director. …
