Will this brutally honest look at dementia finally get us talking or will we turn away? | Sonia Sodha

We see a man giving a speech at his mother’s wake. It starts off as you might expect. But he goes on to tell us how his mother died multiple times in the eyes of those who loved her. When she became convinced her friends were stealing from her. When she asked him, her son, what his name was. When she looked straight through his dad. Then he says she died a final time surrounded by the people who loved her. This is the latest ad from the Alzheimer’s Society. Anna had dementia. At the end, a voiceover from Colin Firth tells us: “With dementia, you don’t just die once, you die again, and again, and again. Which is why at Alzheimer’s Society, we’ll be with you again, and again, and again.” I found it immensely uncomfortable to watch. Using death as a metaphor to describe the progression of a disease experienced by someone living struck me as horribly dehumanising. Throughout the ad we see Anna in her last years juxtaposed against clips of a vivacious younger woman; the message …

What can we learn from 2024’s brutally honest Oscar ballots? | Oscars 2024

What can we learn from 2024’s brutally honest Oscar ballots? | Oscars 2024

Forget the actual Oscars. Increasingly, the highlight of awards season is the sudden influx of Anonymous Oscar Ballots, in which actual Oscar voters scurry away to various industry publications to explain why they voted the way they did. To be clear, the fun of these pieces isn’t getting to hear film-making veterans, who intrinsically have more insight into the production of feature films than a member of the public, laud the work that most impressed them this year. No, the fun of it is that these people are cartoonishly catty and vindictive, and it’s nuts to hear them indiscriminately badmouth everyone in sight. Although a lot of the nominated films this year have (unusually for the Oscars) managed to combine critical acclaim with commercial success, this does mean that many of Sunday’s awards are already a foregone conclusion. Or are they? Let’s parse this year’s flurry of anonymous Oscar ballots to see what the big trends are. John Krasinski takes on Stephen Colbert in a brutally tense arm wrestle

John Krasinski takes on Stephen Colbert in a brutally tense arm wrestle

“Warn our affiliates we might be going long.” These are the words of pumped up Late Show Super Bowl special host Stephen Colbert as he rips off his jacket so aggressively that his mic makes an audible thump, in preparation for an arm wrestle with guest John Krasinski. There’s plenty of fighting talk from Colbert as he slaps Krasinski’s bicep and informs him he’s “gone soft”, but ultimately the IF director/writer emerges the clear victor. Source link

‘Brutally honest’ or ‘ham-fisted cliche’? What does All of Us Strangers say about being gay? | All of Us Strangers

‘Brutally honest’ or ‘ham-fisted cliche’? What does All of Us Strangers say about being gay? | All of Us Strangers

‘It reflects the ignorance of a less tolerant era and the lingering emotional damage this continues to inflict’ Peter Tatchell If you are looking for a sweet, affirmative, feelgood gay movie, All of Us Strangers is probably not for you. It’s a dark, gut-wrenching love story, with a plotline that blurs reality and fantasy. Adam is an isolated, emotionally damaged gay man. He’s struggling to come to terms with the death of his parents when he was 12, and to overcome the sense of outsider otherness he feels on account of his sexuality. Peter Tatchell on Equality Now march, 1992. Photograph: Courtesy Peter Tatchell This inner turmoil shuts down his openness to relationships and leads him to rebuff the doorstep advances of Harry, a younger, seemingly more confident neighbour. Adam then enters a dreamworld of, what if? The two men embark on a passionate affair, with the companionship, love and acceptance that Adam has so long craved – until it comes to a sudden, heartbreaking halt. The saving grace is Adam’s parallel imagined conversation and …

Brutally cold weather expected to hit storm-battered South and Northeast US this weekend

Brutally cold weather expected to hit storm-battered South and Northeast US this weekend

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Memphis residents were urged to boil water and New Yorkers have been warned that roads could be covered with dangerous black ice this weekend as brutal cold and inclement weather continue to sweep across parts of the U.S. Bitterly frigid air spilled into the Midwest from Canada on Friday and several states were under advisories as forecasters warned that wind chills dipping to minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 34 degrees Celsius) could be common through Sunday morning. Heavier-than-forecast snow fell in New York City, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., on Friday. Storms have walloped the Pacific Northwest, Midwest, Plains, South and Northeast with low temperatures, heavy snow, ice storms, freezing rain and high winds for the past two weeks. With a wind chill, temperatures are expected to drop as low as 15 degrees below zero Fahrenheit (minus 26 degrees Celsius) in large portions of Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky and Kansas, the National Weather Service predicted. The bracing weekend weather follows a series of storms blamed for at least 55 deaths around …

Brutally Cold Weather Reaching Deep Into Lower United States

Brutally Cold Weather Reaching Deep Into Lower United States

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Arctic weather brought more misery to much of the U.S. on Saturday, especially for people unaccustomed to such bitter cold in places like Memphis, Tennessee, where residents were urged to boil water and some had no water at all after freezing temperatures broke water mains across the city. Temperatures weren’t expected to rise until after the weekend. At the Four Way Grill in Memphis, owner Patrice Bates Thompson said the water problems have closed their soul food kitchen for days. “This is our staple, and this is what basically drives the force of my family financially,” Thompson told Fox-13 Memphis. “We depend on business, and we have been at home.” So many pipes broke in Memphis that water pressure fell throughout the city. Concerned about possible contamination, Memphis Light, Gas & Water urged its more than 400,000 customers to boil water for drinking or teeth-brushing or use bottled supplies on Saturday while crews worked around the clock to make repairs. Political Cartoons “Our production and treatment of water is working well,” …

‘When I Stand Up, You Sit Down’: Commons Speaker Brutally Slaps Down Rishi Sunak

‘When I Stand Up, You Sit Down’: Commons Speaker Brutally Slaps Down Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak was slapped down by the Commons Speaker on Wednesday after he brandished a “prop” attacking Keir Starmer during PMQs. Lindsay Hoyle told the PM: “When I stand up, please sit down.” The clash came during feisty exchanges between Sunak and Starmer over the issue of human rights. The prime minister attacked the Labour leader for listening to “lefty lawyers” when he was still a practicing barrister. “I’ve even got here the textbook he authored for them,” Sunak said, waving around the front cover of a publication called ‘European Human Rights Law’. Lindsay Hoyle interrupted the PM to tell him off. “When I stand up please sit down,” the Speaker told him. “We don’t use props in this House. If you do need reminding I certainly will.” In 1999 Starmer wrote a book called ‘European Human Rights Law: The Human Rights Act 1998 and the European Convention on Human Rights’. Before becoming an MP in 2015, Starmer was a human rights lawyer and went on to serve as director of public prosecutions. The prime …

Prince Harry ‘Legend of Aviation’ award brutally mocked by army personnel | Royal | News

The decision to name Prince Harry as a ‘Living Legend of Aviation’ has been met with consternation from British army personnel, who claim he served as a “number two” while in Afghanistan. The Duke of Sussex spent ten years serving with the military and completed two tours of Afghanistan as a forward air controller and an Apache helicopter pilot, as well as taking part in numerous flying training missions in the UK, US and Australia. However, while critics have argued that his military record is admirable, he did not do enough to distinguish himself from any other serving pilot. Retired military officer Colonel Richard Kemp told The Sun that the award amounts to just “celebrities massaging each other’s egos”, as he said: “He was a gunner in an Apache helicopter in Afghanistan but so were many, many other people. “I can think of many people who did pretty extraordinary things while serving in the British and American armed forces which would be much more deserving of an award like this.” Royal commentator and author Robert …
