Taliban ban cooperation with diaspora broadcaster

The Afghan Taliban on Thursday warned reporters and experts against working with the London-based broadcaster Afghanistan International TV, saying they would be committing a crime if they worked with the station. A spokesperson for the Taliban-controlled Ministry of Information and Culture alleged that the station, which is accessible through satellite, cable and social media, was committing violations and crossing moral and legal boundaries. “At the commission’s meeting held [Wednesday], it was decided that participating in discussions and facilitating the broadcast of this media outlet in public places is prohibited,” said Habib Ghofran, the spokesperson. Zia ul Haq Haqmal, deputy minister for broadcasting, said people would be committing a crime if they collaborated with the station. He listed 10 reasons people should not work with the broadcaster, including its alleged distortion of information. “If someone does not cooperate on the basis of all these 10 reasons, then it’s the court’s job to give a punishment,” Haqmal said. Harun Najafizada, the broadcaster’s director, said the development would not impact the channel because it has no employees or …

The broadcaster has been off-air since last July following newspaper reports claiming that a then unnamed BBC presenter funded a teenager’s alleged drug habit. He was the BBC’s most high-profile news anchor, often chosen to front coverage of major national events including the death of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022. “Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC,” read a statement on Monday. “After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors. “The BBC has accepted his resignation which it believes will allow all parties to move forward. We don’t believe it appropriate to comment further.” Katie Razzall, the BBC’s culture and media editor, told BBC News …

Huw Edwards has resigned from BBC, broadcaster says | Huw Edwards

The newsreader Huw Edwards has resigned and left the BBC, the corporation has said. A BBC spokesperson said: “Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC. After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors. “The BBC has accepted his resignation, which it believes will allow all parties to move forward. We don’t believe it appropriate to comment further.” Edwards, 62, was suspended by the broadcaster in July last year over allegations he received inappropriate images from a younger person and gave them money. Monday’s announcement came three weeks after the Times reported that Edwards was expected to still be named the corporation’s highest-paid newsreader in July’s annual accounts, having earned up to £439,000 last year despite his suspension. The corporation has confirmed Edwards has not received a payoff. It was reported that BBC bosses were braced for a backlash over Edwards getting his six-figure salary despite being off-air for eight months. He was the corporation’s highest paid newsreader, with a …

Games’ broadcaster embracing AI but remains wary of deepfakes

LONDON : As part of a push by the International Olympic Committee to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) in Paris, the Games’ broadcaster is stepping up its use of the technology – but not without concerns about the risk of “deepfakes”. Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), which produces the live television, radio and digital coverage of the Olympic and Paralympic Games that is then sold to clients, first began using AI at the PyeongChang Winter Games in 2018. “In Paris we will take this to a completely different level,” Yiannis Exarchos, OBS chief executive, told Reuters at an event in London on Friday to discuss the role AI will play at the Paris 2024 Games. “There are a variety of applications, primarily to do with enhancing the experience of the viewer, but also creating significant efficiencies in the way we operate.” Exarchos said OBS had teamed up with Chinese retail giant and Olympic sponsor Alibaba to use AI for 360-degree assisted replays. It is also working with Swiss watchmaker Omega, the official timekeeper of the Paris Games, …

Ms Croxall, 55, who has not appeared on air since March 2023, is taking legal action after she and four other female employees lost their senior positions following the merger of the BBC’s News and World News channels, official documents reveal. Listings for the proceedings, due to be held at London Central tribunal court from 1 May, reveal the case also centres around equal pay. The legal proceedings are set to be one of the most high-profile tribunals faced by the BBC since it lost a gender pay dispute with Newswatch presenter Samira Ahmed. Ms Croxall is one of five women – Karin Giannone, Geeta Guru-Murthy, Kasia Madera, and Annita McVeigh – who were allegedly snubbed by the broadcaster over chief presenter roles last February. …

Journalists strike over pay at Scottish broadcaster STV

Journalists strike over pay at Scottish broadcaster STV

Journalists at the STV picket in Dundee Picture: NUJ STV journalists across Scotland walked out on strike on Thursday after pay negotiations broke down. Picket lines were held in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee with National Union of Journalists members holding placards saying “fair pay now”. They have asked the broadcaster for a 6% pay rise across the board. STV said this is “unrealistic and unaffordable” and said it could only afford this increase for the bottom 3% of earners. STV holds the Channel 3 licences for the north and central regions of Scotland and news and current affairs programming is part of its public service broadcasting commitment. STV News at Six, the most-watched news programme in Scotland, and current affairs show Scotland Tonight will not broadcast as usual on Thursday evening as a result of the walkout. Thanks for subscribing. Close Nick McGowan-Lowe, NUJ national organiser, said: “Journalists at STV have not just been reporting on the cost-of-living crisis – they’ve been experiencing it too. Our members across Scotland produce the award-winning journalism that …

‘No evidence’ Channel 4 bosses were aware of Russell Brand accusations, broadcaster says | UK News

There is “no evidence” managers were aware of allegations against Russell Brand, a Channel 4 investigation has found. It comes after four women alleged in a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches that the comedian and presenter sexually assaulted them between 2006 and 2013. A report, released by Channel 4 on Thursday, said the investigation “found no evidence to suggest that there was knowledge within the channel of the allegations contained in the Dispatches programme about Russell Brand’s behaviour” while he was a presenter on two programmes between 2004 and 2007. However, it did say an allegation made in 2009 by a staff member which concerned the comedian’s conduct towards them was “not passed up Channel 4’s senior management chain” nor investigated at the time as it ought to have been. “Channel 4 has apologised to the former Channel 4 staff member for the breakdown in 2009, communication delays in 2023 and the distress this matter has caused,” the report said. Ofcom has rules on broadcaster impartiality – so why is GB News getting away with breaking them?

Ofcom has rules on broadcaster impartiality – so why is GB News getting away with breaking them?

The UK’s media regulator has found GB News guilty of breaching the UK’s “due impartiality” code in five separate programmes. This brings the total violations for the news channel to 12 in the last 18 months, with eight investigations underway. Despite repeated infringements, Ofcom has not sanctioned the channel or threatened to revoke its broadcast licence. GB News immediately rebuked Ofcom’s judgment. They argued that the regulator was limiting “alternative voices” and represented a “chilling development” in the freedom of UK broadcasting. Ofcom ruled that shows presented by Conservative MPs Jacob Rees-Mogg, Esther McVey and Phillip Davies broke its code about politicians presenting “news” programming. While politicians can anchor current affairs programming, once they step into the role of newsreader, news interviewer or reporter Ofcom considers this a breach of impartiality. Needless to say, Ofcom’s rules do not mean that we never hear directly from politicians about their views. MPs and government ministers have long been free to write partisan columns in newspapers, angrily tweet their ideological opinions or blog polemically about their perspectives. But …

Broadcaster reported J.K. Rowling to the police over alleged transphobic social media post

Broadcaster India Willoughby has claimed that she reported “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling to the police over alleged transphobia. In an interview with Byline TV on Wednesday night, Willoughby — a former “Celebrity Big Brother” contestant and “Loose Women” co-host — claimed that she reported Rowling to Northumbria Police for repeatedly misgendering her online as part of an ongoing feud. “J.K. Rowling has definitely committed a crime. I’m legally a woman. She knows I’m a woman, and she called me a man,” Willoughby said in the interview. “It’s a protected characteristic, and that is a breach of both the Equalities Act and the Gender Recognition Act. She’s tweeted that out to 14 million followers.” Willoughby continued, “I have reported J.K. Rowling to the police for what she said, which I don’t know if that’s going to be treated as a hate crime, malicious communications — but it’s a cut-and-dry offense, as far as I’m concerned.” When asked about the situation by Variety, a Northumbria Police spokesperson offered the following statement: “On Monday, March 4, we …
