Winners of the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2024

The German Society for Nature Photography (GDT) recently announced their winning images from the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2024, selected from nearly 18,000 entries from 38 countries in 11 categories. This year’s overall winner was Jaime Rojo, with a remarkable photograph of Monarch butterflies clustered in trees in Mexico’s El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. Residents of Florida are preparing themselves for Hurricane Milton, currently a Category 4 storm, which is expected to make landfall later tonight or early tomorrow morning. Milton arrives less than two weeks after many Florida cities and towns were hit by Hurricane Helene—piles of storm debris still line the streets. Mandatory-evacuation orders are in place in cities along Florida’s central west coast, and residents have spent recent days boarding up windows, piling sandbags, and looking out for loved ones as they ready themselves for this enormous storm. Photos: California’s Massive Park Fire Continues to Grow

An enormous wildfire—one of the largest in state history—is currently raging in northern California. Over the past five days, the Park Fire has expanded to more than 360,000 acres, and is only 12 percent contained, according to Cal Fire. Dry conditions and strong, gusty winds have driven the rapid growth of the blaze, reportedly caused by a man pushing a burning car into a ravine in the city of Chico. For more than a week now, torrential rainfall in Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul has swollen rivers, triggered landslides, and caused widespread flooding. More than 90 deaths have been blamed on the flooding, with another 130 people listed as missing. Rescue efforts continue across the state and in the hard-hit city of Porto Alegre. The intense rains have abated for the moment, but flooding rivers continue to rise downstream, forcing thousands to seek shelter and assistance.
