38 Photographs of 1940s Paris by Robert Frank Acquired by MFA Boston

A total of 38 photographs by Swiss-American photographer Robert Frank (1924-2019) was acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), the institution announced in a statement last week. The acquisition includes 34 photographs donated by the June Leaf and Robert Frank Foundation, and four works that were purchased using donated funds from the former Citibank chief executive John Reed and his wife Cynthia. The 38 images were made while Frank was in Paris in 1949. Some offer glimpses of street scenes such as children watching a blind street performer and a “circus” trolley car. Though Frank is primarily known for his highly influential 1958 book ” Related Articles The Americans, which captured post-war American society, the recently acquired photographs were taken when he returned to Europe after living in New York for two years. “We are thrilled to add these important photographs to the Museum’s collection which give insight into Frank’s career while contributing to our ability to tell the story of artistic transatlantic connections,” said Kristen Gresh, Estrellita and Yousuf Karsh Senior Curator of Photographs …

Boston Globe paywall strategy: Chief commercial officer interview

Boston Globe paywall strategy: Chief commercial officer interview

Boston Globe office. Picture: Craig F Walke Like so many regional media brands, the Boston Globe nearly went out of business in 2009 after the financial crash. Today it stands out as an exemplar of how journalism can not just survive but thrive in the digital age. In the latest Press Gazette Future of Media Explained podcast, the title’s chief commercial officer Kayvan Salmanpour explained how the multi-Pulitzer Prize-winning title carried off an evolution many other regional publishers have struggled to replicate. The episode, which was sponsored by digital publishing platform Quintype, also featured insight from that company’s vice president of international partnerships Chad Hussain. Privately-owned Boston Globe Media does not publish financial results but today has close to 1,000 employees, with 261,000 digital subscriptions and 75,000 in print. London’s main news publisher, the Standard, is believed to have somewhere between 100-150 staff left after moving to free weekly publication last month and it has made seven straight years of losses. The reported GDP of the greater Boston area (at around $500bn) is only slightly …

Why Is Boston Called Beantown?

Why Is Boston Called Beantown?

Boston started life in 1630, founded by English Puritans. Like the Pilgrims ten years prior, they fled religious persecution in Britain. With its superb anchorage, Boston Harbor afforded easy access to international trade, particularly the slave trade. This oddly influenced the city’s future nickname as Beantown.   Beantown: Where It Started Three Sisters Planting Method. Source: World of Wonder   The use of beans in Massachusetts Bay Colony started a few miles south. The Plymouth Colony, founded in 1620, made use of beans first. Beans were already part of the Native tribe’s diet, along with corn, squash, and other vegetables. Beans got planted together, along with corn and squash. In what could be seen as a precursor, Native tribes around the time the Pilgrims arrived would dig a pit, lining it with rocks to cook.   After lighting a fire to heat the rocks, stone pots filled with beans, bear fat, and maple sugar were dropped. These would slowly bake until done. The newly arrived colonists took this up, too, occasionally using substitutes. This dish …

Toronto Treads Lightly, Choosing 4th-Place Minnesota Over 3rd-Place Boston as PWHL Playoff Opponent

Toronto Treads Lightly, Choosing 4th-Place Minnesota Over 3rd-Place Boston as PWHL Playoff Opponent

Having the option of choosing their playoff opponent wasn’t taken lightly by the staff and players of the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s Toronto franchise for clinching first-place in the standings. So sensitive and in-depth were the discussions, coach Troy Ryan knew better on Monday night than to disclose the reasons behind Toronto’s decision to face fourth-place Minnesota over third-place Boston — two teams who finished with identical 12-9-3 records (including four OT/SO wins apiece), with Boston having the tiebreaking edge. “To be honest, from a hockey perspective, I think it would be somewhat irresponsible to tip my hat to the exact details,” Ryan said. “So at this point, we’ll keep that within house.” Of all the aspects taken into consideration, ranging from analytics, head-to-head records, travel and injuries, among the most important, perhaps, was the fear of providing their opponent any additional motivation entering the best-of-five semifinal series, which opens in Toronto on Wednesday. Montreal, which finished second, will face Boston in the other semifinal starting on Thursday. Minnesota coach Ken Klee expressed little surprise …

No charges for woman after bodies of 4 babies are found in Boston freezer

No charges for woman after bodies of 4 babies are found in Boston freezer

No charges will be filed against a 69-year-old woman after the bodies of four frozen infants were found in a Boston apartment freezer in 2022, the Suffolk County district attorney announced this week. District Attorney Kevin Hayden called the investigation into the circumstances of the grim discovery on Nov. 17, 2022, “one of the most complex, unusual and perplexing that this office has ever encountered.” Investigators don’t know whether the four babies were born alive, which in part led to the decision not to bring criminal charges, Hayden said in a statement Tuesday. The babies were found in a freezer in an apartment in South Boston after a man called police and said his wife found them while she was cleaning out the apartment of the man’s sister, the district attorney’s office said. The babies, two male and two female, were frozen solid in shoe boxes wrapped in foil, the prosecutor’s office said. DNA tests showed they were all siblings. The medical examiner could not determine the cause of death or whether the babies were …

Boston Dynamics gives Spot bot a furry makeover

Boston Dynamics gives Spot bot a furry makeover

Boston Dynamics may have relocated the bipedal Atlas to a nice farm upstate, but the company continues to let everyone know its four-legged line of Spot robots have a lot of life left in them. And after years of obvious dog-bot comparisons, Spot’s makers finally went ahead and commissioned a full cartoon canine getup for its latest video showcase. Sparkles is here and like its fellow Boston Dynamics family, it’s perfectly capable of cutting a rug. Unlike, say, a mini Spot programmed to aid disaster zone search-and-rescue efforts or explore difficult-to-reach areas in nuclear reactors, Sparkles appears designed purely to offer viewers some levity. According to Boston Dynamics, the shimmering, blue, Muppet-like covering is a “custom costume designed just for Spot to explore the intersections of robotics, art, and entertainment” in honor of International Dance Day. In the brief clip, Sparkles can be seen performing a routine alongside a more standardized mini Spot, sans any extra attire. But Spot bots such as this duo aren’t always programmed to dance for humanity’s applause—their intricate movements highlight …
