Catholic bishops mediate truce with Mexican cartel bosses

MEXICO CITY — Citing a “profound crisis of violence and social disintegration,” Mexico’s Catholic bishops are staking out an aggressive new role in national security, going so far as to sit down with feuding drug traffickers in one blood-soaked state to hammer out a truce. The church is also pressing for a change in the anti-crime strategy pursued by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Church leaders recently persuaded the candidates in the July 2 presidential election to sign a “National Commitment for Peace” that includes a lengthy list of proposed reforms, such as strengthening local police forces and making the justice system more professional and transparent. Together, the initiatives amount to a new level of activism for a church that has largely stayed outside the political fray. Mexico is the world’s second-most-populous Catholic country, after Brazil. But its priests have historically been constrained by the anticlerical policies that took root during the 19th-century war of independence from Spain. Until the 1990s, it was illegal for priests even to wear their vestments in public. The church …

Complaints against the 48-year-old comedian were made to the BBC and Metropolitan Police after a Channel 4 Dispatches and Sunday Times investigation aired in September revealed accusations by four women of rape, sexual assault and abuse between 2006 and 2013. Brand has strongly denied all accusations said to have taken place while at the height of his fame between 2006 and 2013. He recently told former Fox News host Tucker Carlson in a YouTube video that the claims were “very, very hurtful”. Channel 4 has been forced to question how much its bosses were aware of since the presenter worked on the broadcaster’s programmes Big Brother’s Big Mouth and Kings Of Comedy between 2004 and 2007. A report, released by Channel 4 on Thursday, said: …

‘No evidence’ Channel 4 bosses were aware of Russell Brand accusations, broadcaster says | UK News

There is “no evidence” managers were aware of allegations against Russell Brand, a Channel 4 investigation has found. It comes after four women alleged in a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches that the comedian and presenter sexually assaulted them between 2006 and 2013. A report, released by Channel 4 on Thursday, said the investigation “found no evidence to suggest that there was knowledge within the channel of the allegations contained in the Dispatches programme about Russell Brand’s behaviour” while he was a presenter on two programmes between 2004 and 2007. However, it did say an allegation made in 2009 by a staff member which concerned the comedian’s conduct towards them was “not passed up Channel 4’s senior management chain” nor investigated at the time as it ought to have been. “Channel 4 has apologised to the former Channel 4 staff member for the breakdown in 2009, communication delays in 2023 and the distress this matter has caused,” the report said. World’s top fossil-fuel bosses deride efforts to move away from oil and gas | Fossil fuels

World’s top fossil-fuel bosses deride efforts to move away from oil and gas | Fossil fuels

The bosses of the world’s leading oil and gas companies have poured scorn on efforts to move away from fossil fuels, complaining that a “visibly failing” transition to clean energy was being pushed forward at an “unrealistic pace”. The oil executives, gathered at the industry’s annual Cera Week conference in Houston, Texas, have taken turns this week to denounce calls for a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels, despite widespread acknowledgment within the industry, as well as scientists and governments, of the need to radically reduce planet-heating emissions to avoid the worst effects of the climate crisis. “We should abandon the fantasy of phasing out oil and gas, and instead invest in them adequately,” said Amin Nasser, chief executive of Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil company, to applause in the room. Nasser dismissed projections by the International Energy Agency (IEA) that global demand for oil and gas will peak by 2030, claiming that rising energy costs mean that people will require “the importance of oil and gas security” rather than shift to renewables. “In fact, …

Behind the French dream of entrepreneurship, the reality of bosses earning below the minimum wage

Behind the French dream of entrepreneurship, the reality of bosses earning below the minimum wage

Nelly Bouet, manager of the café-restaurant Le Moderne, Saint-Germain-des-Fossés, February 22, 2024. JEROME CHABANNE / HANS LUCAS FOR LE MONDE On one side of the coin, there is Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, and his €36.5 million pay package in 2023. On the flip side, there are thousands of small bosses, beginners or experienced, running shops or sole proprietorship, who earn the minimum wage, or even less, like Nelly Bouet, 42, owner of a café-restaurant near Vichy, in central France. In the noisy hubbub of her business, Bouet’s voice is tinged with anger mixed with fatalism. “Before I set up here in 2018, I was a wealth manager,” she said. “I wanted to stop so that I wouldn’t be crisscrossing France to go and see customers; I wanted to work for myself, no longer chasing the money.” A bad bet. “Today, I’m above the poverty line and below the minimum wage,” she said. The Covid-19 pandemic and the lifestyle changes it crystallized sent her café-restaurant into a tailspin. “Until 2020, everything was going very well. …

When £17m isn’t enough: FTSE firms plead to pay bosses millions more | Executive pay and bonuses

When £17m isn’t enough: FTSE firms plead to pay bosses millions more | Executive pay and bonuses

There was a sharp intake of breath last month when the pharmaceuticals group AstraZeneca cemented chief executive Pascal Soriot’s position as the best-paid FTSE 100 boss with a £17m pay package, up from £15.3m a year earlier. The latest award brings to £137m the amount he has earned since joining in 2012. While it drew the anger of corporate governance experts, Soriot’s generous payout was just a fraction of the sums his counterparts at the biggest US companies take home. Sundar Pichai of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, stands as the highest-earning boss on the US-based S&P 500, with a $226m pay packet in 2022. That gulf has fuelled fears over London’s ability to attract and retain global talent, and been used to strengthen boardroom calls to boost executive pay to compete with Wall Street-level salaries. Concern in the City follows a string of defections in recent years. Top bosses have crossed the Atlantic to go to rival companies, and London-listed companies have departed to US stock exchanges, where deeper pockets and weaker shareholder scrutiny give …

NCIS bosses give hopeful update on Mark Harmon’s return: ‘Going to be something special’

NCIS bosses have given a hopeful update on Mark Harmon’s potential return to the CBS drama. The actor starred as Leroy Gibbs from the show’s first episode in 2003 until its 19th season in 2021, when his character chose to stay in scenic Alaska, where his last case led him. During a recent interview with TV Line, showrunners Steven D. Binder and David North revealed that the “door is open” for Mark and that his return has to be “something special”.  “Of course the door is always open,” said Steven. “He’s such a pivotal character in the show and we left him in such an ethereal place.  © CBS Photo ArchiveMark Harmon played Agent Gibbs until 2021 “I think when we bring him back, which we’d love to do, we’re not going to bring him back for two minutes. It’s going to be something special.” The comments come after Michael Weatherly reprised his role as Tony DiNozzo in the second episode of season 21, which paid tribute to the late David McCallum, who played Dr. …

Newsquest and Reach bosses respond to local news quality questions

Reach chief digital publisher David Higgerson, Newsquest chief executive Henry Faure Walker and Mill Media founder Joshi Herrmann at the Lords Communications and Digital Committee about the future of news on 27 February 2024. Picture: Parliament TV screenshot Bosses at Reach and Newsquest have responded to a claim from the founder of the Manchester Mill newsletter start-up that quality “obviously hasn’t” been maintained in UK local media. However Reach chief digital publisher David Higgerson and Newsquest chief executive Henry Faure Walker left Lords Communications and Digital Committee chair Baroness Tina Stowell “a bit baffled by the picture that you’re painting about the success of your businesses, when the challenge seems to be around the quality of content”. Joshi Herrmann, who founded the Manchester Mill on newsletter platform Substack in 2020 and has since expanded into Liverpool, Sheffield and Birmingham, told the committee, which is examining the future of news, on Tuesday: “I think the larger question of how has quality been maintained in local media generally is that it obviously hasn’t. “In the local town …
