Boris Johnson’s ‘window of opportunity’ for comeback revealed by author | Politics | News

Boris Johnson may have a “window of opportunity” for a political comeback two years after the next general election, according to a top journalist and author. Tim Shipman, author of new book Out which covers the Brexit years, said those close to Mr Johnson believe the best chance could come at that point. He said if the Tories lose the election and a new leader is failing to turn things around for the party it could spark calls for a return by the former prime minister to take on Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. Asked about the prospect of a comeback by Mr Johnson, Mr Shipman told GB News: “The people around him would say at the moment he’s making lots of money, he’s very passionate about Ukraine, he’s off doing things he’s interested in, he’s in no rush to return. “I think the scenario in which they imagine that might become a possibility is not straight after the general election or even before it. “But if you get a new leader in who tries …

Tories want Boris Johnson to re-emerge as campaign trail ‘centrepiece’ to boost fortunes | Politics | News

Conservative MPs want Boris Johnson to return as a “centrepiece” of the election campaign as the party battles to escape electoral disaster in the looming contest. There are even hopes that the former Prime Minister could stand for election again in a “blue collar” seat. MPs remain in awe of Mr Johnson’s record of twice winning the London mayoralty, persuading the country to vote for Brexit and delivering the 2019 landslide. With the latest WeThink polling putting the Conservatives on 20 per cent – just 10 points ahead of Reform UK and 16 points behind Labour – there are warnings that Mr Johnson’s skills should not go to waste. Sir John Hayes, who chairs the influential Common Sense group of Tory MPs said: “Boris is a remarkable campaigner as we’ve seen proved time and time again and it would be very wise indeed to engage him, and indeed to make him a centrepiece of the campaign. “Boris has always inspired both a great admiration from many and scepticism and worse from some. But so it …

Boris Johnson set for big general election comeback in bid to rescue Tories | Politics | News

Boris Johnson is set to campaign for the Tories in Red Wall seats ahead of the next general election. The former prime minister is likely to be deployed in constituencies across the north of England and the Midlands which fell from Labour to the Conservatives in his landslide 2019 victory. It comes after a thawing of relations between Mr Johnson and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. A source familiar with Mr Johnson’s thinking told The Times: “If there is a way he can help that is right for him and for the party he will. “Sunak will of course be front and centre but he [Johnson] always wanted to take the fight to Starmer. “Just as he has always supported the Conservative Party he will do so now.” They said Mr Johnson was likely to travel to marginal marginal constituencies, make speeches and appear on leaflets. A Government source added: “Don’t expect Boris to appear on stage with Rishi — that’s not going to happen — but he is up for it. The relationship is in …

Boris Johnson comeback boost as he tops poll of Tories to take on Keir Starmer | Politics | News

Boris Johnson has topped a new poll of Tory politicians to take on Sir Keir Starmer in a fresh comeback boost. The survey asked respondents who they would back over the Labour leader and different Conservative politicians in a head-to-head. Mr Johnson was the only one to outperform Rishi Sunak and beat other Tories including former home secretary Suella Braverman, Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch and Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt. Some 28% would vote for Mr Johnson against Sir Keir, compared to 25% for the Prime Minister. The poll also found 52% of 2019 Conservative voters who have not decided who they will back at the next general election said they would return to the Tories under Mr Johnson. Lady McAlpine, a Conservative supporter who commissioned the poll, said she believed the Tories would beat Labour if Mr Johnson led a “new squeaky clean Conservative Party”. Of the current party, she told The Telegraph: “If we have the brains, they’re not evident and that’s because the personality is not there, the charisma is not there. “To …
