Bob Marley’s One Love Is Part of Music Movie Boom

Paramount received the best Valentine’s Day gift any studio could hope for when Bob Marley: One Love, the biopic about the legendary Jamaican musician, set a new midweek record for the holiday when jamming to $14 million and besting the $11.5 million grossed by The Vow in 2012. But Valentine’s Day turned out to be only a warm-up act as the film transformed into an all-audience box office sensation in another win for the music biopic boom sweeping Hollywood. Iconic music artists — of which there is no shortage — are providing studios with much-needed IP as tried and true genres, namely superhero movies, lose their singing powers. Barely a week goes by without a new major studio project being announced, including this week’s news that Sony and Sam Mendes are embarking on an ambitious magical mystery tour that will see each of the four Beatles get their own feature film, all to be released in theaters in 2027. Heading into the Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day corridor, One Love was tracking for a respectable …

Bob Marley One Love Box Office Wipes Out Madame Web With Huge $51M

Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love delivered a huge $50 million-plus domestic opening over the six-day Valentine’s Day-Presidents Day corridor, enough to crush Madame Web‘s $25.8 million start, a record worst for Sony’s superhero adventures. Estimates show One Love racking in an estimated $51.1 million for the six days domestically, including $33.2 million for the four-day Presidents Day weekend and a record $14 million on Valentine’s Day (rival studios say the decision to go out on sweetheart’s day day was a smart choice in building momentum). The movie’s weekend debut is on par with the starts of such musical biopics as Rocketman or Elvis, and did almost double the business it was tracking to do. (Grosses could shift once weekend actuals are issued Tuesday morning following the Monday holiday.) Overseas, One Love earned an impressive $29 million for a global launch of $80 million against a $70 million budget. The film opened at No. 1 in 13 markets and set new opening day records for a music biopic in the U.K., France and other territories. In …

Bob Marley’s Son Ziggy on What the Late Icon Would Think of His Biopic ‘One Love’ (Exclusive)

When it comes to the Kingsley Ben-Adir-led biopic, Bob Marley: One Love, the only opinion Ziggy Marley thinks matters is the one of his late father, Bob Marley. The musician gave ET’s Kevin Frazier a personal tour of the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, Jamaica, and opened up about the upcoming film his family produced with the aim of celebrating the life and music of “an icon who inspired generations through his message of love and unity.” One Love highlights Bob’s powerful story of overcoming adversity and the journey behind his revolutionary music. “For me, in this film, I think one thing that it made me think about is what my father and my mother went through that we didn’t see. Like the emotional [turmoil], and that’s what the film is really. It’s really exploring stuff,” Ziggy explains. “The Bob Marley that’s in the TV and that you seen in the videos — that’s not the Bob Marley we’re really exploring. We’re exploring the Bob Marley you don’t know. It made me think about, as a human being, what emotional things he …
