How to blur your home on Google Street View (and why you should)

How to blur your home on Google Street View (and why you should)

Google Street View offers a window to the world in all its bizarre, intimate, and often unfiltered glory. However, this peek into everyday life also extends to your home, potentially revealing more than you’d like — from views into bedroom windows to concerns about privacy and safety. Fortunately, there’s a solution. You can request Google to blur your house permanently, leaving behind only a vague outline of the building. The process is surprisingly simple. Launched in 2007, Street View provides a ground-level perspective of numerous cities and towns worldwide, captured by roving vehicles and photographers equipped with camera-laden backpacks. From its inception, the service has been a subject of controversy, touching on expected concerns as well as unexpected ones. In 2008, for instance, the Minnesota suburb of North Oaks objected to its inclusion on Google’s service, citing trespassing concerns. In response, Google promptly removed the images from Street View. Tantrums of the rich and famous: nine acts that turned on their audience – from Elton to Bieber to Blur | Music

Tantrums of the rich and famous: nine acts that turned on their audience – from Elton to Bieber to Blur | Music

When Coachella 2024 comes to be remembered by future generations, the abiding image will be that of Damon Albarn attempting to engage the crowd in a game of call and response, and then failing, and then having a bit of a go at them. In fairness to Albarn, it was a weird booking. Blur have always fared poorly in the US. Is this the band’s fault for writing all those songs about how much they dislike America? We may never know. Either way, by berating the crowd for their ambivalence – yelling “You’ll never see us again so you may as well fucking sing it” – Blur have joined the ranks of acts who have turned against their audiences. Or, to be more specific, they’ve rejoined the ranks. In 2003, after Graham Coxon left the band, Blur played an intimate “secret” show in Madrid, which fell apart after Albarn lost some of his bracelets. This led to him dragging the whole show to a halt while he yelled at the crowd. “Unless they’re on that …

Twisty-Turny Tales That Blur the Line Between Fantasy and Reality in Black Life

Twisty-Turny Tales That Blur the Line Between Fantasy and Reality in Black Life

When the truth is stranger than fiction, stories that use fiction to explore the truth can get pretty weird. In Weird Black Girls, Elwin Cotman delivers seven short stories that go long on fantasy and supernatural phenomena to delve into the very real dangers and anxieties of contemporary Black life. We’ve got a town ruled by a punishing tree, old friends catching up as chaos unfolds at a Mexican joint, a couple of narcissists messing with an activist community, a dude living through his lover’s memories, and LARPing adventure that takes a wild turn. And that’s just a few of the twisty-turny tales that blur the line between fantasy and reality! Throughout, Cotman lays down deep human truths about friendship, love, betrayal, and bitterness. Weird Black Girls is available now wherever books are sold. The neighborhood was named Braintree after the three colleges built into a colossal prehistoric tree uprooted during the Rupture and lodged like a splinter in the western end of town. On the T the four of us stood squeezed in a …

Blur’s Damon Albarn Reacts To Coachella Crowd’s Lukewarm Response

Blur’s Damon Albarn Reacts To Coachella Crowd’s Lukewarm Response

Blur frontman Damon Albarn had some choice words for the crowd at Coachella over the weekend, after festival-goers didn’t exactly give the band the warmest of receptions. The British group performed at the US festival on Saturday night, delivering a set that included classic hits and new material. However, the crowd at Coachella (where Grammy-winning rapper Tyler, The Creator was Saturday night’s headliner) didn’t exactly seem too fussed about the fact they were watching British rock royalty. In particular, Damon seemed displeased at not being able to get the crowd singing along with hit single Girls & Boys, despite his best efforts. “You’re never seeing us again, so you might as well fucking sing it,” he told the crowd towards the end of the song, adding: “Know what I’m saying?” As clips of the set began being shared across social media, they sparked plenty of debate about if the crowd actually “deserved” to see Blur – or whether the Britpop group were an appropriate booking for such a prominent slot on the Coachella line-up. Blur’s …

Labour selects 26-year-old Gogglebox star to take on Deputy PM Oliver Dowden | Politics | News

Labour has selected yet another celebrity candidate to take on the Tories at the General Election, turning to a familiar face from Channel 4’s hit show Gogglebox. Josh Tapper, who regularly appeared on the television reaction show from the age of 15, was last night selected to fight deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden in his Hertfordshire seat of Hertsmere. Reacting to his selection, Mr Tapper said he is “thrilled and honoured” to have won the selection and pledged to not let down local Labour members. He optimistically said: “The work to unseat the Deputy Prime Minister starts now!” Mr Downden has a huge 21,313 majority, winning 62.5% of the vote in 2019, so it is unlikely Mr Tapper will deliver on his goal of toppling the top Tory. However despite his television stardom, he is no political novice. After starring on Gogglebox for four years alongside his mother, father and sister, he left the show in 2017 to pursue a career in the civil service. Mr Tapper joined Downing Street, leaving in 2019. In 2022 …

Blur drummer Dave Rowntree selected as Labour candidate for Mid Sussex

Blur drummer Dave Rowntree selected as Labour candidate for Mid Sussex

Rowntree is not the only musician standing in the next election; Labour is also hoping to draw on the rockstar power of Tom Gray, of the band Gomez, to win over the Brighton Pavilion constituency. Essex-born Rowntree, who is also a trained lawyer, previously represented the party during his four years as a Norfolk County councillor. He announced in 2021 he was standing down as councillor due to the Covid pandemic and the Conservative government’s handling of lockdown policies.  “The pandemic has made life very difficult for everyone. Like many people, I live with a vulnerable family member so I have had to spend much of the year shielding,’’ Rowntree said at the time. ‘‘Many countries whose governments have followed the science and tackled the epidemic head-on aren’t in this position.  ‘‘I could complain that it’s unfair, but I think my residents could also complain about unfairness if I stood again, not knowing when I’d be able to get back out there, knocking on doors, looking for problems to solve.’’ During his break from politics, …

Blur drummer Dave Rowntree selected as Labour candidate | Politics News

Dave Rowntree, the drummer for Blur, has been selected as a Labour candidate at the next general election. Rowntree will stand for the Conservative-held Mid Sussex seat, hoping to turn it red for the first time. The constituency, covering Burgess Hill, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath and the Mid Sussex villages, is currently represented by Mims Davies. The Guardian view on Ukraine’s president and general: the military and political blur | Editorial

The Guardian view on Ukraine’s president and general: the military and political blur | Editorial

Politics doesn’t end in wartime, even when it has been subsumed by more immediate, existential matters. With the passage of time, Winston Churchill’s wartime leadership can appear as if it were unassailable – yet in reality, criticism grew loud enough that the House of Commons held two votes of confidence in 1942. Though some have compared Volodymyr Zelenskiy to Churchill, the Ukrainian president will be grateful that he has not faced anything approaching that kind of challenge. The “rally round the flag” effect, along with his charisma, effective diplomacy and personal courage as Russia invaded, created a remarkably enduring mood of national unity. Even those criticising the decisions or conduct of those around the president shrank from questioning his. But by last autumn, it was clear that the country was seeing the return of politics. It is still far from business as usual. But Mr Zelenskiy’s decision to fire Ukraine’s admired commander-in-chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, on Thursday has turned up the volume. Mr Zelenskiy says politics played no part. But he has not explained the move beyond citing the …

Steve Borthwick’s England masterplan in a blur as World Cup rivals sense upset | England rugby union team

What music is Steve Borthwick listening to at the moment? Looking down England’s team sheet it could just be that Oasis are back on his playlist. “Because maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me. And after all, you’re my wonderwall.” Given the pace at which bad news is multiplying, though, the most appropriate soundtrack for English rugby is currently anything by Blur. So much for settled squads, clarity and leisurely fine-tuning. Borthwick is the most organised of men but when it was put to him on Thursday that he must be on Plan K or L by now he did not dispute it. With his captain and only specialist No 8 both suspended, his most athletic winger now a non-starter, further injuries wrecking his back-three options and the faith of supporters fast dissolving, England’s road to next month’s World Cup buildup could hardly be more potholed. Add in Borthwick’s continuing unhappiness with the “bewildering” disciplinary saga that saw Owen Farrell effectively go from a yellow card to red to yellow to red again …
