Why Trump’s nuclear talks with Iran could be far more successful than Biden’s

Evelyn Hockstein | Amer Hilabi | AFP | Getty Images DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Talks between U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration and Iran’s government on a potential renewed nuclear agreement began on a positive note over the weekend, representatives of both countries said, despite enduring sticking points and a lack of clarity on the specific conditions held by each side. Notably, there was more optimism toward a deal and overall communication between the longtime adversaries. Delegates from the U.S. and Iran agreed to hold more talks next week in Rome, while Iran’s Foreign Affairs Ministry described the negotiations of Saturday as having taken place in a “constructive atmosphere and based on mutual respect.” This highlights the gaping difference …

US Scours World For Egg Supplies After Biden’s “Insane Slaughter Of 150 Million Chickens”

US Scours World For Egg Supplies After Biden’s “Insane Slaughter Of 150 Million Chickens”

The Biden-Harris regime’s questionable handling of the nation’s food supply chain—leading to the culling of 150 million egg-laying chickens amid the avian flu crisis—has led to nationwide supply disruptions and record-high egg prices. There were no visible countermeasures Biden officials put in place to offset the loss of domestic production, and the out-of-control culling only created an epic disaster for consumers. Now, the Trump administration is left to manage the fallout, scrambling to secure global egg supplies in an urgent effort to stabilize prices.  On Thursday, Elon Musk wrote on X, “It’s true. There was an insane slaughter of 150 million egg-laying chickens ordered by the Biden administration.”  It’s true. According to Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, the previous …

Biden’s Tarnished Legacy – The Atlantic

This is an edition of The Atlantic Daily, a newsletter that guides you through the biggest stories of the day, helps you discover new ideas, and recommends the best in culture. Sign up for it here. President Joe Biden still imagines that he could have won. Asked by USA Today’s Susan Page whether he could have beaten Donald Trump if he had stayed in the race, Biden responded: “It’s presumptuous to say that, but I think yes.” Reality thinks not. Of course, we’ll never know for sure, but the evidence (including polling) suggests that he would have been crushed by an even larger margin than Kamala Harris was. Biden’s answer is a reminder that his legacy will be tarnished by his fundamental misreading of the moment and his own role in it. To be sure, Biden can point to some impressive successes. He leaves behind a healthy and growing economy, a record of legislative accomplishment, and more than 230 judicial appointments, including a Supreme Court justice. And then there were the failures: the chaotic exit …

Joe Biden’s Moral Wisdom – The Atlantic

The president has commuted the sentences of 37 men on federal death row to life without parole, a historic move. Roberto Schmidt / AFP / Getty December 23, 2024, 6:13 PM ET This morning, the White House announced that President Joe Biden has commuted the sentences of 37 men on federal death row to life without parole. The historic move came shortly after a batch of pardons and commutations for hundreds of people convicted of nonviolent crimes, as well as Biden’s pardon of his own son. In his official statement, Biden emphasized that “I condemn these murderers, grieve for the victims of their despicable acts, and ache for all the families who have suffered unimaginable and irreparable loss.” But he said that his conscience and experience made him “more convinced than ever that we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level.” The political wisdom of Biden’s lame-duck pardons and commutation jubilee is unclear. It seems likely to me that Republicans will use the details of death-row prisoners’ crimes to tar …

Biden’s Unpardonable Hypocrisy – The Atlantic

The president vowed not to pardon his son Hunter—and then did so anyway. Brendan Smialowski / AFP / Getty December 1, 2024, 9:18 PM ET When President Joe Biden was running for a second term as president, he repeatedly ruled out granting a pardon to his son Hunter, who has pleaded guilty to tax fraud and lying on a form to purchase a gun. “He was very clear, very upfront, obviously very definitive,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said of one of his many promises to this effect. Biden professed a willingness to abide by the results of the justice system as a matter of principle. But in breaking his promise, and issuing a sweeping pardon of his son for any crimes he may have committed over an 11-year period, Biden has revealed his pledge to have been merely instrumental. In a defiant statement issued tonight, Biden insisted that his son’s prosecution was selective and unfair. “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases,” he wrote, “can reach any other conclusion …

SNL Mocks Trump, Biden’s Oval Office Meeting, With Alec Baldwin Cameo

Saturday Night Live didn’t waste any time on the latest episode, spoofing Donald Trump and Joe Biden‘s historic Oval Office meeting at the White House earlier this week. “Hello everybody. Thank you to the press for joining us to document this very important presidential transition meeting. I’m being serious right now. Even though we disagree, I’m eager to sit down for a respectful conversation,” Dana Carvey’s Biden says. “Yeah, get a load of me. Instead of being rude and crazy like usual, I’m doing quiet and serene, which in many ways is a lot scarier,” James Austin Johnson’s Trump adds before Biden continues, “I’m gonna sit here and smile while ignoring the giant fire right behind me.” Trump later complains about how he “forgot how boring [being] president is.” “I love running, hate being,” he continues. “And I hate the White House, so old, so dated. So many of the carpets are stinky and sticky at the same time. Sort of like being at a Regal Cinemas. Now I have to live here for the …

Joe Biden’s Late Goodbye – The Atlantic

Joe Biden’s Late Goodbye – The Atlantic

“Our best days aren’t behind us, they’re before us,” President Joe Biden said last night at the Democratic National Convention. It was a poignant line. A statesman must believe that what he is doing will benefit his country after he exits the stage, but Biden’s speech was on the first, rather than the last, day of the convention because his fellow Democrats had concluded that his own best days were behind him and nudged him to step down from the nomination. And so there Biden was, capping off a night on which the Democrats pursued a delicate mission: to honor the sitting president before quickly changing gears to produce a coming-out party for Kamala Harris, Democrats’ newly named presidential nominee. Hillary Clinton managed to distill the whole business down to just a few sentences. “There’s a lot of energy in this room, just like there is in this country. Something is happening in America. You can feel it,” she said. “First, though, let’s salute President Biden. Thank you, Joe Biden, for your lifetime of service …

Biden’s address was a moving piece of political theatre and a rebuke of Trump | US elections 2024

Biden’s address was a moving piece of political theatre and a rebuke of Trump | US elections 2024

There was 6 January 2021, and a violent coup attempt by a president desperately trying to cling to power. Then there was 24 July 2024, and a president explaining why he was giving up the most powerful job in the world. Joe Biden’s address on Wednesday night was a moving piece of political theatre, the start of a farewell tour by “a kid with a stutter from modest beginnings” who entered politics in 1972 and made it all the way to the Oval Office. For diehard Democrats it was a case of: if you have tears, prepare to shed them now. The speech was also a rebuke of his predecessor Donald Trump’s authoritarian impulses in both word and deed. Although he never mentioned his predecessor by name, Biden laid out two radically different visions of the US presidency set to clash again in November. ‘History is in your hands,’ Biden tells country in powerful Oval Office address – video Last Sunday the 46th president bowed to a chorus of fellow Democrats questioning his age and …

‘Capable’ Harris and Biden’s legacy: key takeaways from the president’s address | US elections 2024

Joe Biden addressed the nation from the Oval Office on Wednesday night in an emotional speech that encompassed some of the reasons that led him to withdraw from the presidential race. This was the first speech Biden has made since he announced his withdrawal from the race on Sunday. Most notably, the 81-year-old president, who was recovering from Covid-19 this week, highlighted the importance of passing the torch to a new generation, referring to his endorsement for Kamala Harris as the new contender for November’s elections. In a roughly 10-minute speech, Biden pointed to the threat that he says Donald Trump poses to democracy in the US. “When Ben Franklin was asked,” Biden said, “as he emerged from the convention going on, whether the founders have given America a monarchy or a Republic, Franklin’s response was: a republic, if you can keep it.” “Whether we keep our republic is now in your hands,” Biden said. Here are the key takeaways: 1. Biden delivered a short, poignant speech focused on the weight of the office Biden …

The oldest-ever American president’s political career is coming to an end as he yields to pressure to step aside.
