Watch a 1915 Film Adaptation of Alice in Wonderland Enhanced in 4K, with Costumes Based on Briginal Illustrations by Sir John Tenniel

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland predates the invention of cinema by a couple of decades. Nevertheless, much like the “Drink me” bottle and “Eat me” presented to its young protagonist, Lewis Carroll’s fantastical tale has called out the same message to generations of filmmakers around the world: “Adapt me.” This century, though not even a quarter of the way over, has already brought us full-length Alice movies (to say nothing of television productions) from Europe, South America, and of course the United States. Those last include separate adaptations of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass by no less an auteur than Tim Burton. Both of those books were also taken on by a writer-director named W. W. Young more than a century ago, though he simply combined portions of both novels into a single feature. You can watch this silent Alice in Wonderland from 1915 above, in a version its uploader calls “by far the highest quality version of this film on the internet,” assembled “primarily from two prints scanned …

Researchers build robot based on creature that lived nearly 500 million years ago

This field utilizes Softbotics, which involves robotics incorporating flexible electronics and soft materials, to explore the biomechanical factors that influenced evolution using extinct organisms. (CREDIT: Carnegie Mellon University) Humans have existed on Earth for around 300,000 years, a mere blip in the planet’s history. This short span represents just 0.007% of Earth’s timeline, making our presence relatively recent in the grand scheme of things. Consequently, the animal kingdom we observe today, which shapes our understanding of evolution and inspires modern mechanical systems, is only a fraction of the creatures that have inhabited the Earth throughout history. This field utilizes Softbotics, which involves robotics incorporating flexible electronics and soft materials, to explore the biomechanical factors that influenced evolution using extinct organisms. “Our goal is to bring biological systems back to life through Softbotics, allowing us to mimic them and understand their operations,” explained Phil LeDuc, a professor of mechanical engineering. Led by LeDuc and Carmel Majidi, a research team has revived pleurocystitids, a marine organism that existed approximately 450 million years ago. These creatures, part of …

Plant based brownies that you can feel good about eating

Plant based brownies that you can feel good about eating

Did you know that you can grow brownies? I never tried it personally; however, I was able to use some leftover ingredients to create what I consider to be a very delicious plant-based brownie.  Clean eating is not as hard as you think; it can actually be pretty manageable sometimes. Well, for me anyway, because I adopted a nasty habit of reading what’s on the back of the boxes of some of my favorite, classic, old-school snacks. Oreos, Cheetos, and Taki’s all contain ingredients I cannot identify, like Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, and Riboflavin. This scares me because I’m not a dietitian and shouldn’t have to be a scientist to understand what I put inside my body. Don’t get me wrong; I indulge in my favorite toxic desserts occasionally, but mostly in desperate situations — like when I’m stuck in the airport at 4:00 AM and have no other options. At home, I have options.  Before I understood how to use my options properly, I used to dibble and dabble with my childhood favorite, Duncan Hines. Duncan Hines …

A message to Joe Biden: a Palestinian state must be based on these three pillars | HA Hellyer

A message to Joe Biden: a Palestinian state must be based on these three pillars | HA Hellyer

The foreign secretary, David Cameron, recently surprised observers by raising the possibility of the UK recognising a Palestinian state before the end of a peace process with Israel. The US has also said it could recognise a Palestinian state after the war in Gaza and is reportedly drawing up policy options along these lines. These seem like remarkable developments amid the carnage of the Israeli assault on Gaza. But do they constitute a breakthrough that could lead to a positive outcome in the Middle East, or will they result in the formalisation of the Israeli occupation? The devil is in the detail. The Israeli occupation of Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem (as well as the Golan Heights and Sinai) began in 1967, and was followed by the UN security council resolution 242, which spelled out the way forward. For decades, the resolution, underpinned by a singular principle, served as the basis for negotiations between Israel and its Arab neighbours. The principle was simple: a pre-condition of peace would be Israel withdrawing from the …

Apple’s Latest AI Tool Can Animate an Image Based on Your Description

Apple’s Latest AI Tool Can Animate an Image Based on Your Description

Apple has made another addition to its growing AI repertoire with the creation of a tool that leverages large language models (LLMs) to animate static images based on a user’s text prompts. MacRumors image made with DALL·E Apple describes the innovation in a new research paper titled “Keyframer: Empowering Animation Design Using Large Language Models.“ “While one-shot prompting interfaces are common in commercial text-to-image systems like Dall·E and Midjourney, we argue that animations require a more complex set of user considerations, such as timing and coordination, that are difficult to fully specify in a single prompt—thus, alternative approaches that enable users to iteratively construct and refine generated designs may be needed especially for animations. “We combined emerging design principles for language-based prompting of design artifacts with code-generation capabilities of LLMs to build a new AI-powered animation tool called Keyframer. With Keyframer, users can create animated illustrations from static 2D images via natural language prompting. Using GPT-4 3, Keyframer generates CSS animation code to animate an input Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG).” To create an animation, the …

New Apple AI Model Edits Images Based on Natural Language Input

New Apple AI Model Edits Images Based on Natural Language Input

Apple researchers have released a new open-source AI model that is capable of editing images based on a user’s natural language instructions (via VentureBeat). MacRumors image made with DALL·E Called “MGIE,” which stands for MLLM-Guided Image Editing, it uses multimodal large language models (MLLMs) to interpret user requests and perform pixel-level manipulations. The model is capable of editing various aspects of images. Global photo enhancements can include brightness, contrast, or sharpness, or the application of artistic effects like sketching. Local editing can modify the shape, size, color, or texture of specific regions or objects in an image, while Photoshop-style modifications can include cropping, resizing, rotating, and adding filters, or even changing backgrounds and blending images. A user input for a photo of a pizza could be to “make it look more healthy.” Using common sense reasoning, the model can add vegetable toppings, such as tomatoes and herbs. A global optimization input request might take the form of “add contrast to simulate more light,” while a Photoshop-style modification could be made by asking the model to …

Nearly 500 jobs to be based at new Coventry business park following £24m investment

Nearly 500 jobs to be based at new Coventry business park following £24m investment

Work to transform part of the former Meggitt aerospace site in Coventry into a new business park featuring hundreds of jobs has been completed thanks to a multi-million-pound investment by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). Over the last two years the WMCA has put nearly £24m into the regeneration of the derelict Meggitt site off Holbrook Lane working with urban logistics property developer Chancerygate. Now, after 24 months of work, Holbrook Park is offering businesses 31 industrial and warehouse units spread over 12 acres of the former aerospace manufacturing site. Some of the units are already occupied and once fully let, the business park is expected to be home to nearly 500 jobs. The site has stood mostly empty since Meggitt, whose customers include aviation giants Airbus, BAE Systems and Boeing, moved the majority of its operations and staff to new headquarters in nearby Ansty four years ago. Although the new business park occupies just one section of the 65-acre former Meggitt site, planning permission has already been granted for 500 new homes on …
