Tilley’s Bakery, which has been trading for 36 years on the high street of Hythe, Southampton, is now up for sale. The current owner has owned and managed the bakery for seven years, having completely refurbished the property throughout. Tilley’s is split across two floors, with the ground floor featuring a modern window display area, counter and sandwich bar and main bakery to the rear. Upstairs is a spacious storage area, office and toilets. The bakery sells a wide variety of cakes, pastries, savoury items, bread and sandwiches, as well as catering for large orders. Business property adviser Christie & Co is managing the sale. The line snaked down the parking lot toward the busy traffic of York Boulevard and around the corner, curving around the patio of a neighboring seafood restaurant. Guests began queuing for Fondry, Eagle Rock’s newest bakery, half an hour before its doors opened, but only a few dozen guests would get to taste any croissants, croffins or danishes today. About 25,000 Greggs workers will get a slice of a £17.6m bonus pie after the high street bakery chain made record annual profits. The staff will receive a bonus in their wages at the end of March to recognise their “hard work and effort” during 2023, CEO Roisin Currie announced. The windfall follows Greggs making a 27% increase in annual profits. The company, famed for its sausage rolls and steak bakes, delivered a bumper pre-tax profit of £188.3m for 2023 – up from £148.3m the previous year, after like-for-like sales in company-managed shops rose by 13.7%. On an underlying basis, pre-tax profits lifted 13% to £167.7m. But Ms Currie insisted the bakery giant was “not complacent” about tough high street trading conditions, as she reiterated Greggs would not increase its prices this year.
