There’s No Such Thing as Good Housing News

This is Work in Progress, a newsletter about work, technology, and how to solve some of America’s biggest problems. Sign up here. If you want to understand America’s strange relationship with housing in the 21st century, look at Austin, where no matter what happens to prices, someone’s always claiming that the sky is falling. In the 2010s, the capital of Texas grew faster than any other major U.S. metro, pulling in movers from around the country. Initially, downtown and suburban areas struggled to build enough apartments and single-family homes to meet the influx of demand, and housing costs bloomed across the region. Since the beginning of the pandemic, even as rent inflation has gone berserk nationwide, no city has experienced anything like Austin’s growth in housing costs. In 2021, rents rose at the most furious annual rate in the city’s history. In 2022, rent growth exceeded every other large city in the country, as Austin’s median rent nearly doubled. This might sound like the beginning of a familiar and depressing story—one that Americans have gotten …

Austin Hosts First In-Person Ukraine Defense Contact Group of 2024

Austin Hosts First In-Person Ukraine Defense Contact Group of 2024

Ramstein, Germany —  Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is in Germany to build upon the international community’s military support for Ukraine, even as the U.S. Congress has yet to approve additional funding for Kyiv. This is Austin’s first international trip since he was hospitalized on Jan. 1 due to complications from surgery to treat his prostate cancer in late December. On Tuesday, he will host another round of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG), which brings together officials from more than 50 nations to coordinate their Ukraine efforts. Ukrainian forces have continued to fight back against Russian forces in the east while inflicting “considerable damage” to Russian forces in the Black Sea. However, Moscow— with the help of North Korea and Iran — has drastically ramped up its defense production capacity, forcing Ukraine to retreat from some battles due to ammunition shortages, according to a senior defense official, who spoke to reporters on the condition of anonymity ahead of the UDCG. “Ukraine is heavily outgunned on the battlefield. We’ve received reports of Ukrainian troops rationing …

Waymo starts fully autonomous rides in LA tomorrow; Austin later this year

Waymo starts fully autonomous rides in LA tomorrow; Austin later this year

Waymo has announced that it will start offering fully autonomous ride-hailing services to the general public in Los Angeles starting tomorrow, March 14th, and that Austin, Texas will open up “later this year.” Waymo has been testing its Level 4 autonomous ride-hailing service in Los Angeles since late 2022, and is now finally ready to open up the service officially. Level 4 is one of the SAE driving automation levels, signaling that the car drives itself with no human driver input, but is limited to certain circumstances – most driver assist systems on cars today (e.g. Autopilot, Super Cruise, etc.) count as Level 2, with only Mercedes offering a Level 3 system in the US. In this case, Waymo’s limitation means it’s geofenced to a particular service area. Waymo has spent the last few months hosting its “Waymo Tour,” where it bounced around small parts of town to offer free rides to locals in various neighborhoods one-by-one (we experienced it on a chaotic weekend day in Venice Beach). Now, Waymo is ready to open up to …

Tesla takes over new industrial park in Austin suburb, potentially for battery production

Tesla takes over new industrial park in Austin suburb, potentially for battery production

Tesla has taken over most of a new industrial park project in Austin’s suburb of Kyle. The reason why is not confirmed, but it could be for battery production. Despite Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas site in Austin being its biggest gigafactory site to date, the automaker hasn’t shied away from securing more space around the growing central Texas city. Tesla has secured several buildings in the 5-building Kyle/35 Logistics Park in Kyle, Texas, a suburb south of Austin. According to the Austin Business Journal, Tesla has secured leases for over 900,000 square feet in the park’s Buildings 2, 3, and 5. Now, a new filing confirms that Tesla has also secured 127,000 square feet of the 224,000-square-foot Building 1, which means that Tesla is taking over most of the park with at least 1 million square feet of the park’s 1.4 million-square-foot. As for what Tesla plans to do with the significant new space not too far from its Gigafactory Texas, where it produces Model Y, Cybertruck, and battery cells, it’s not exactly clear. But the …

Chargers make deal with Gus Edwards as Austin Ekeler era ends

Chargers make deal with Gus Edwards as Austin Ekeler era ends

After remaining quiet for the first 4½ hours of free agency Monday, the Chargers agreed to terms with former Baltimore running back Gus Edwards. The deal will reunite the veteran with Greg Roman, who is the Chargers’ new offensive coordinator after serving in the same role with the Ravens from 2019-22. A short time later, the Chargers added a run-blocking tight end in Will Dissly, who was cut by Seattle after six seasons. Edwards’ addition came just before free agent Austin Ekeler reached a new deal with Washington, ending his seven-year run with the Chargers. In another notable exit, former first-round pick Kenneth Murray Jr. agreed to a two-year deal with the Tennessee Titans, NFL Media reported. Turning 29 in April, Edwards had a career-high 810 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in 2023. He has averaged 4.9 yards per attempt on 699 career carries. General manager Joe Hortiz, who also came from Baltimore, and coach Jim Harbaugh both have spoken of a desire to build a stronger, more forceful running game in 2024. The Chargers …

This week, it was all about Rivian and its splashy reveal of not one, but three future EVs. I attended the event to see the vehicles up close. Perhaps, more importantly, I also went to talk to executives, investors and customers to get a better understanding of where Rivian is headed and how folks are feeling about this EV upstart that is still far from turning a profit. I even ran into former Waymo CEO and now Rivian board member John Krafcik who was in attendance and cast a positive tone about the company’s future. I also interviewed founder and CEO RJ Scaringe after the event. Much of our conversation centered around the R2 and a big and hopefully fruitful bet to shift production to its existing …

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Enjoy a Texan Date Night With a Nostalgic Twist

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Enjoy a Texan Date Night With a Nostalgic Twist

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were spotted enjoying a date night dinner Thursday evening in Austin, Texas ahead of Markle’s Friday keynote speech at the SXSW Festival. The city has a reputation for outstanding Tex-Mex cuisine, but queso wasn’t the main event for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Instead, their choice of restaurant served up a heaping dish of nostalgia. The duo reportedly dined at a corner table at Soho House Austin, the local iteration of the international private members club. In a way, it’s also where the whole Meghan-and-Harry saga began: The club’s London outpost was the scene of the couple’s very first date in July 2016, where they bonded over drinks, the beginning of a whirlwind relationship that would capture the world’s attention and change the British monarchy. In his memoir Spare, Harry recalled thinking Markle was “heart-attack beautiful” on that first date at Soho House London, which Markle had suggested for their meeting due to its status as “her headquarters whenever she came to London.” Despite Harry being half an hour …
