Former Atlanta chief financial officer pleads guilty to stealing money from city for trips and guns

ATLANTA (AP) — The former chief financial officer for Atlanta pleaded guilty on Monday to stealing money from the city for personal travel and guns and trying to cheat the federal government on his income taxes. Jim Beard, 60, pleaded guilty to one count of federal program theft and one count of tax obstruction in federal court in Atlanta. U.S. District Judge Steve Jones is scheduled to sentence Beard on July 12. Beard could face as many as 13 years in prison but is likely to be sentenced to substantially less under federal guidelines. Beard served as the city’s chief financial officer under Mayor Kasim Reed, managing Atlanta’s financial resources from 2011 to 2018. Beard is the 10th person to be convicted in an anti-corruption probe into Reed’s administration. Most of the others were convicted on charges of giving or taking bribes for city contracts. Reed himself has never been charged. During his time in office, Beard used city money to pay for personal trips and to illegally buy two machine guns for himself, he …

Only in Atlanta: the small-town scandal of the Trump-Fani Willis case | Atlanta

Only in Atlanta: the small-town scandal of the Trump-Fani Willis case | Atlanta

It’s not you, it’s the appearance of impropriety. Add that breakup line to the regional lexicon now that the Fulton county district attorney, Fani Willis, has cut ties with Nathan Wade – the lawyer she picked to prosecute Donald Trump for allegedly subverting Georgia’s 2020 election proceedings, and whom she says she later began dating. Last Friday, Judge Scott McAfee ruled that the county’s case could move forward if either Willis or Wade stepped down to eliminate the “appearance of impropriety”. Within hours, Wade tendered his resignation. It’s the end of an affair that had Atlanta written all over it. Atlanta is a land of contradictions, the place where the old south and the new Black bourgeoisie converge, the backdrop for the epic romances Gone with the Wind and Love & Hip-Hop. It’s a big city, but it has a parochial attitude. (“Stop moving to Atlanta,” goes the unofficial motto, “We full.”) In the wake of McAfee’s ruling, the city is unwinding some of those contradictions in the national spotlight, trying to square the salaciousness …

Sanya Richards-Ross Exits ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ Ahead of Season 16

Sanya Richards-Ross Exits ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ Ahead of Season 16

After just two seasons, Sanya Richards-Ross is departing The Real Housewives of Atlanta.  During the March 14 episode of his Sirius XM show, Andy Cohen Live, Bravo host Andy Cohen confirmed that the Olympic track and field star, 39, has decided to step away from the series amid the unusually long hiatus in between filming seasons 15 and 16.  “How do you feel about Kandi [Burruss], Sanya and Marlo [Hampton] leaving the show?” Cohen, 55 asked his guest, Mariah Smith. The clip was quickly picked up and posted to social media channels by viewers who shared their shock at Cohen so “casually” revealing that yet another big name was leaving RHOA after Kandi Burruss and Marlo Hampton were previously confirmed to be exiting. “Andy casually announced Sanya is leaving #RHOA although it was never officially announced in the press,” one fan wrote in a tweet. Sanya — who welcomed her second child with her husband, Aaron Ross, in December — has yet to publicly announce her departure on social media or in an interview like her former co-stars have done.  …

Andrew Harnik/AP ATLANTA – With its funky carpet, neon signs and moody lighting, Cascade skating rink definitely has a vibe – and it has been a cornerstone of Atlanta’s Black community for decades. Dean Anthony has been coming here since he was a kid with friends and family for roller skating, slushies and birthday parties. “I’m not the best skater, so I have more memories falling down on the skating rink,” Anthony said, laughing. Anthony is a Democratic strategist and organizer. He says people who hang out at Cascade and places like it could shape the next election – if campaigns don’t take them for …

Who Won the Battle of Atlanta?

Who Won the Battle of Atlanta?

With Ulysses S. Grant now general-in-chief of all Union forces, direct command of the Western Theater of the Civil War went to General William Tecumseh Sherman. Both Grant and Sherman were known for their aggression, and Sherman wanted to end the war quickly by seizing the remaining Southern railways and industry. This meant capturing the vital city of Atlanta, Georgia, with four railways leading to all parts of the Confederacy.   Victory Goes to the Union An image of the Battle of Atlanta [Georgia], fought between Union and Confederate soldiers on July 22, 1864. Source: The University of Georgia Press The Battle of Atlanta was a major victory for the Union, thanks to both its strategic benefits and its high publicity in Northern newspapers. This boosted public morale in the North at a crucial time period – the rapidly approaching 1864 presidential election. Although the North was no longer in any danger of invasion by the South, as had occurred in both 1862 with the Battle of Antietam and 1863 with the Battle of …

NASCAR reveals webbed glove used by driver Joey Logano in cheat storm

NASCAR reveals webbed glove used by driver Joey Logano in cheat storm

NASCAR bosses have revealed the glove driver Joey Logano during last weekend’s qualifying in Atlanta. Managing director Brad Moran showcased the glove to reporters after it was found in Logano’s car. Fellow driver Denny Hamlin had suggested it was found following a tip-off by a rival team. Logano wore the glove on his left hand, placing it outside the window of the car during last Saturday’s qualifying, in a move suspected of helping to create an aerodynamic blocker. It was black and webbed with an unknown material between every finger to optimise its effects. Logano’s rival Corey Lajoie said in Las Vegas on Saturday that Logano did wear the glove and that his team – Penske – would have computer-simulated one before ever considering using it on track. Moran said Logano’s was one of five cars pulled for random inspection after qualifying ended in Atlanta. He said: “We spotted something that was honestly concerning. “As you can see, the entire glove is webbed. The reason for that is you can obviously block more air, the …

NASCAR: Daniel Suarez wins at Atlanta in three-way photo finish

NASCAR: Daniel Suarez wins at Atlanta in three-way photo finish

HAMPTON, Ga. —  Daniel Suárez hoped but wasn’t certain he was the winner after the closest finish ever at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Then came the photo evidence: Suarez edged Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch in a three-wide blur at the line to win a crashed-filled NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday. The second career win in 253 Cup races for Suárez set off a celebration that included a long series of congratulations from other drivers for the popular native of Monterrey, Mexico. “It was a very special moment,” said Suárez, who entered this contract year with his future seemingly uncertain with Trackhouse Racing. “I was just hoping. I saw the tower and thought I was first. I thought I had it but then they said there was a review.” The review confirmed the first win for Suarez since June 2022 at Sonoma. It was his first victory on a speedway, but he said he’s not satisfied after locking up a spot in the playoffs in only the second race of the year. “Some people actually told …
