Microsoft finds workers are tired and overwhelmed but AI ready to assist

A Microsoft workplace study has uncovered how workers feel about artificial intelligence (AI), with almost two in three workers stating they don’t have enough time or energy to do their jobs. The report compiled findings from 31,000 respondents from 31 countries as well as a deep dive into “trillions of aggregated productivity signals in Microsoft 365, along with labor market trends on LinkedIn”. Microsoft’s 2023 Annual Work Trend Index, the fourth time the tech giant has conducted the poll, contains a lot of useful information on how professionals view their contemporary workplace, with just under half of those surveyed sharing a concern that AI will have an impact on their job security. The report states 75% of workers now use AI in the workplace, with a feeling that the technology is a great tool at times of stress and high-intensity to allow them to concentrate on the imperative tasks. Of those who are already using AI, 78% are said to bring their own AI resources to work. Workers overwhelmed and out of energy The Work …

US to Post Influenza A Wastewater Data Online to Assist Bird Flu Probe, Official Says

US to Post Influenza A Wastewater Data Online to Assist Bird Flu Probe, Official Says

CHICAGO (Reuters) -The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is planning to post data on influenza A found in wastewater in a public dashboard possibly as soon as Friday that could offer new clues into the outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in cattle herds. CDC wastewater team lead Amy Kirby told Reuters on Thursday that the agency has identified spikes of influenza A, of which H5N1 is a subtype, in a handful of sites and is investigating the source. She said there is no indication of human infection with H5N1. Testing wastewater from sewers proved to be a powerful tool for detecting mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 virus during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kirby said the CDC has been collecting influenza data in wastewater in about 600 sites since at least last fall to better track respiratory infections. That data can now be helpful in tracking the outbreak of H5N1 bird flu that has infected 42 dairy herds in nine U.S. states, and one dairy farm worker. Scientists are closely watching for changes in the …

Ball-balancing robot could assist wheelchair users

Ball-balancing robot could assist wheelchair users

Ballbot learning to push a wheelchair Courtesy Carnegie Mellon University A human-size robot balancing on a ball that acts as a spherical wheel can push wheelchairs as smoothly as a human assistant – and may carry out this caregiving task better than many humanoid robot helpers that walk on two legs. The so-called ballbot was first developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania in 2004. In its latest form, it has the capability to manoeuvre a wheelchair indoors with minimal bumpiness for the wheelchair user. As such, it shows how robots could someday… Source link

Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driver assist under investigation after two fatal crashes

Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driver assist under investigation after two fatal crashes

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating two fatal crashes involving two separate Ford Mustang Mach-Es crashing into stationary vehicles, where three people have died. In at least one of the crashes, Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driver-assist system was activated at the time of the crash, while the second one is under preliminary investigation. Here’s what happened. The first fatality occurred in San Antonio, Texas, after a 44-year-old Mustang Mach-E driver using the driver assist system crashed into a stationary Honda, killing the 56-year-old driver. Another Mach-E driver was involved in a fatal crash in Philadelphia on March 3, although it’s not known yet if the BlueCruise played a role. The incident in Texas involved a driver of a 2022 Mach E striking a 1999 Honda CR-V that was stopped in the middle lane of I-10 with no lights at around 9:50 p.m. The second accident near Philadelphia, which killed two people, involved a Mach-E that hit two stationary vehicles on Interstate 95 at 3:13 a.m. on March 3. Both drivers of the stationary cars were killed, …

‘Safe’ driver assist tools could be doing more harm than good

‘Safe’ driver assist tools could be doing more harm than good

Drivers in the US and around the world are increasingly interested in getting behind the wheel of new vehicles capable of automatically changing lanes and maintaining speeds on highways. Carmakers argue vehicles equipped with these partially autonomous tools, collectively referred to as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are a win-win, offering drivers both convenience and added safety, especially during long trips where fatigue sets in. ADAS, in other words, can cut back on human error.  But a first-of-its report on ADAS systems from The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), one of the nation’s leading independent safety groups, questions whether or not these tools are actually improving safety at all. The IIHS tested ADAS systems from 14 separate carmakers and not a single one of them earned its highest “good rating,” while 11 of the systems received a “poor” rating. The striking IIHS results highlight the importance of rigorous testing to ensure highly-marketed ADAS are actually being used the ways they are advertised and not unintentionally causing more harm than good.   “Some drivers may feel …

Politics news outlet Axios first reported the news about Kerry, 80, on Saturday. Kerry was instrumental is helping to broker the 2015 Paris climate agreement, as well as the UAE consensus that calls for the transition away from fossil fuels reached in December at Cop28 in Dubai. He believes that a second term in the White House for Biden would be the “single biggest” difference for progress in the climate crisis, Axios reported, initially citing a source close to the administration. Kerry and Biden talked in the Oval Office earlier this week, after Kerry had attended the Cop28 global climate summit in Dubai late last year, and the climate envoy wants to promote the …

Which goalkeepers have got an assist with almighty throws down field? | Football

“During England Under-21s European Championship win, James Trafford made their second goal against Germany with a throw to Harvey Elliott. Which other goalkeepers have got an assist with their hands?” tweets Dan Griffin. Elliott’s brilliant solo effort added more gloss to a tournament Trafford will never want to forget: no goals conceded, one created. Goalkeeper assists are increasingly common – there have been 95 in the Premier League era – though the majority involved a timely punt downfield rather than a throw. Peter Schmeichel got the first of those 95 assists with a huge up and under at Bramall Lane on 15 August 1992. But his right arm was a much greater weapon than his right foot. When he joined Manchester United in 1991, Schmeichel’s ability to fling the ball more than half the length of the field, a skill he developed playing handball in Denmark, was a revelation. His throws, allied to the pace of Ryan Giggs and Andrei Kanchelskis in particular, turned United into a great counterattacking team almost overnight. In his first …
