Here in the twen­ty-twen­ties, a hope­ful young nov­el­ist might choose to enroll in one of a host of post-grad­u­ate pro­grams, and — with luck — there find a will­ing and able men­tor. Back in the nine­teen-thir­ties, things worked a bit dif­fer­ent­ly. “In the spring of 1934, an aspir­ing writer named Arnold Samuel­son hitch­hiked from Min­neso­ta to Flori­da to see if he could land a meet­ing with his favorite author,” says Nicole Bianchi, nar­ra­tor of the InkWell Media video above. “The writer he had picked to be his men­tor? JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The fifth person to win a full ride to Belhaven University, courtesy of a scholarship named after bestselling author Angie Thomas, is 19-year-old aspiring writer Maya McFadden. McFadden, of Jackson, Mississippi, will start at Belhaven in August after she transfers from Hinds Community College, university officials said. “When I first found out that I had won the Angie Thomas scholarship, I was amazed,” McFadden said in a news release Thursday. “I’ve always wanted to be a writer, so, I submitted my works just to try, not really expecting much. TikTok seeks aspiring artists to show off their talent in live music competition

TikTok announced Monday that it’s hosting a virtual talent show on TikTok Live to reward aspiring artists, giving them a chance to win up to 500,000 Diamond rewards. The event is called “Gimme The Mic” and will take place in September. Starting today through August 16, participants 18 years and older can register on the audition page in the app. Users must post a submission video that’s a minimum of 30 seconds long with the hashtag #GimmeTheMic. According to the terms and conditions, the audition can’t be a duplicate video that the creator has published before, be sexually explicit or promote alcohol/illegal substances. TikTok will select 30 participants from the audition round who will then go on to the Semi-Final (September 1-3), where they must compete in pairs and perform multi-guest live videos on the @tiktoklive_us account.
