Frozen Empire Opening to Tepid M-Plus at Box Office

Frozen Empire Opening to Tepid $41M-Plus at Box Office

[ad_1] Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will have no trouble winning a relatively quiet weekend at the box office but opinion is divided as to whether it can reach $42 million to $44 million in its domestic opening. Sony remains bullish that it will indeed hit that mark after earning $16 million on Friday, including $4.7 million in Thursday previews. Rival studios, however, show Frozen Empire coming in at around $41 million, behind the $44 million launch of the pandemic-challenged Ghostbusters: Afterlife in 2021. Nearly 40 percent of Friday’s gross came from premium-format screens, including select Imax locations. (Dune: Part Two still has a large Imax footprint.) The newest Ghostbusters entry is challenged by middling reviews and a B+ CinemaScore from audiences, compared to an A- for Afterlife. Another challenge is bad weather along the east coast. Box Office: ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ and ‘Dune: Part Two’ Leading Weekend

[ad_1] Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune: Part Two are still going strong at the box office, with both movies celebrating milestones this weekend. From DreamWorks Animation and Universal, the Jack Black-voiced Kung Fu 4 is expected to top the chart with an estimated $31.5 million-plus from 4,067 theaters as it leaps past the $100 million mark to finish Sunday with a pleasing 10-day domestic total of roughly $109.4 million, based on Friday and early Saturday grosses (numbers for all films could shift by Sunday). The pic is looking at a respectable decline of 46 percent. Not far behind is Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 2, now in its third weekend. The Legendary-Warner Bros tentpole is the first release of 2024 to clear $200 million domestically. The pic is expected to gross around $29 million from 3,847 cinemas for the weekend, putting its North American cume north of $205 million through Sunday. New offerings this weekend include feel-good canine adventure drama Arthur the King, featuring an ensemble cast led by Mark Wahlberg. The Lionsgate and eOne film …

Focus on Doing Films the “Whole Entire Family Can See”

[ad_1] Mark Wahlberg is all about making family-friendly movies at the moment. The veteran actor recently opened up to Yahoo Entertainment about the types of projects he looks for as he embraces getting older, similar to some of his latest roles in The Family Plan, Uncharted and Arthur the King. “You know, I do enjoy doing things that the whole entire family can see,” Wahlberg said. “Look, I’m 52 years old now. I’m a dad of four. I’ve got a kid in college. I like playing age-appropriate roles. I think a lot of people don’t embrace that and audiences are like — this doesn’t seem real.” The Ted actor shares four children with his wife, Rhea Durham. Having been in the industry for decades following his breakout role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 movie Boogie Nights, Wahlberg said he now feels audiences want to see “the guy and the gal being in the same age bracket.” “There’s many different things that I think audiences frown upon and I want to do things that are believable and …
