What to Know About the Prison Sentence for a Movie Armorer in a Fatal Shooting by Alec Baldwin

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A movie weapons armorer received the maximum sentence of 18 months in jail for involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer by Alec Baldwin on a Western movie set, as authorities now turn their focus on prosecution of Baldwin himself. A New Mexico judge on Monday found that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed’s recklessness amounted to a serious violent offense, while noting few indications of genuine remorse from the defendant since her conviction in March. Prosecutors blame Gutierrez-Reed for unwittingly bringing live ammunition onto the set of “Rust,” where it was expressly prohibited, and for failing to follow basic gun-safety protocols . Attention now turns to Baldwin’s upcoming trial on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the October 2021 death of Halyna Hutchins at a movie ranch on the outskirts of Santa Fe. Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer of the film, was pointing a gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal when the gun went off, killing her and wounding director Joel Souza. Baldwin has pleaded not guilty and says he …

“Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed sentenced: How we got here

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the “Rust” film armorer who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the deadly on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Monday.  The sentence was the maximum Gutierrez-Reed could have received for loading a live round of ammunition into a prop revolver that went off while held by actor Alec Baldwin in 2021. Aside from fatally wounding Hutchins, the live round also injured “Rust” director Joel Souza. Gutierrez-Reed, who originally pleaded not guilty, was convicted following a two-week trial in Santa Fe, New Mexico in March. She was remanded to custody at the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Facility while awaiting the results of her appeal, which Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer denied. Prosecutors at the time argued that Gutierrez-Reed “was negligent, she was careless, she was thoughtless,” adding that she seemed more “worried about her career” than about those directly impacted by the tragic shooting.  According to a report from the New York Times, Judge Sommer’s sentencing followed the release of summaries of phone calls Gutierrez-Reed made from the detention …

She was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter after loading a prop gun that killed the movie’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins. Now Gutierrez-Reed has been sentenced to 18 months in prison. Before issuing the sentence, Santa Fe judge Mary Sommer said she hadn’t expressed accountability for the accidental death. “In her own words, she said she didn’t need to be shaking dummies all the time.” During a scene rehearsal in 2021, the film’s main actor, Alec Baldwin, pointed what was supposed to be an unloaded gun toward the camera. It fired off, …

‘Rust’ armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed called jurors ‘idiots’ in jail phone calls, prosecutors say

‘Rust’ armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed called jurors ‘idiots’ in jail phone calls, prosecutors say

“Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed blasted the jurors who convicted her of manslaughter charges in recorded jail phone conversations as “idiots” and “a–holes” and complained that they took only two hours to deliberate, according to a recent filing by prosecutors. Those crude comments by Gutierrez-Reed were among the revelations made by prosecutors ahead of her sentencing on Monday. Gutierrez-Reed also said she wants Alec Baldwin, who was handling the gun that fired the fatal shot on the movie set in 2021, to go to jail, too, and that she won’t testify at his upcoming criminal trial if subpoenaed. Prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis contend these comments show why Gutierrez-Reed should not receive a conditional discharge, which is what her lawyers are seeking. Prosecutors are seeking the maximum penalty of 18 months in prison. They write in the filing that Gutierrez-Reed’s conversations with her mom, boyfriend and her attorney’s paralegal demonstrate her “complete and total failure to accept responsibility for her actions.” Gutierrez-Reed’s nearly two-week criminal trial centered on her role in the October 2021 “Rust” film set …

“Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and not guilty of tampering with evidence in the on-set shooting involving Alec Baldwin and the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The two-week trial in New Mexico ended on Wednesday when the jury announced their verdict in a quick deliberation that was only two and a half hours. Gutierrez-Reed, who originally pleaded not guilty, now faces up to 18 months in prison at a later sentencing date. The judge ordered that she be held in custody until sentencing, NBC News reported. The fatal shooting on the “Rust” film set was at the center of the criminal trial. Prop Armorer Convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter in ‘Rust’ Shooting

Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the armorer who managed the prop firearms on the set of the western drama Rust, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for loading a live round of ammunition into the weapon held by actor Alec Baldwin, which went off during the production in October 2021 and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The jury in the Santa Fe criminal case found her not guilty of a second charge of evidence tampering. Sentencing will take place at a later date, and she could face 18 months in prison.  When she was first charged in January 2023, prosecutors also announced that Dave Halls—the assistant director,  a job that typically involves safety checks during filming—had accepted a plea bargain for negligent use of a deadly weapon. Hall, who received  a suspended sentence and six months of probation, had declared the firearm to be a “cold gun” before handing it to Baldwin, according to sheriff’s department reports. Baldwin was re-charged with involuntary manslaughter in the case this past January, after prosecutors initially dropped the accusation. A grand jury determined …

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter after she loaded a gun for actor Alec Baldwin on the set of Rust in 2021 which fired and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.  The movie set weapons handler was found not guilty of a second charge, tampering with evidence, and now faces up to three years in prison.  “This case is about constant, never-ending safety failures that resulted in the death of a human being,” prosecutor Kari T Morrissey said during closing arguments on Wednesday. The armorer had allegedly failed to notice that live bullets had been mixed in with dummy rounds in a box of ammunition on set, and Ms Morrisey accused her of being “negligent”, “careless” and “thoughtless”.  © PoolHannah Gutierrez-Reed walks into the courtroom Prosecutors had also claimed that they had evidence that Gutierrez-Reed had brought a box of live bullets to the New Mexico film set from her own home in California, which spread through the set and into the dummy boxes, although Ms Morrissey told the jury she did not believe it …
