Donald Trump announces plan for huge migrant detention centre at notorious Guantanamo Bay | US | News

US President Donald Trump has announced he is preparing a migrant detention centre at Guantanamo Bay. The President said the centre at the US military base located on the eastern tip of Cuba will hold up to 30,000 migrants living illegally in the United States. Mr Trump said the facility would be used to “detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people”. “Some of them are so bad we don’t even trust the countries to hold them because we don’t want them coming back, so we’re going to send them out to Guantanamo,” he added. “This will double our capacity immediately, right? And, tough.” He made the announcement shortly before signing the Laken Riley Act into law as his administration’s first piece of legislation on Wednesday evening. The bipartisan measure means that people who are in the US illegally and are accused of theft and violent crimes will have to be detained and potentially deported even before a conviction. After signing the measure into law, Mr Trump said: “Today I’m also signing an …

Zuckerberg Announces Plans to Automate Facebook Coding Jobs With AI

“An AI that can effectively be a sort of midlevel engineer.” Meta Narrative Meta-formerly-Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says he intends to start automating coding jobs with AI — this year.  Zuckerberg announced these ambitions, which if realized would send shockwaves throughout Silicon Valley, on an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, as spotted by Business Insider. “Probably in 2025, we at Meta, as well as the other companies that are basically working on this, are going to have an AI that can effectively be a sort of midlevel engineer that you have at your company that can write code,” Zuckerberg said in the interview. A midlevel engineer at Meta, per BI, earns a salary somewhere in the mid-six figures. For the People Though Zuckerberg doesn’t explicitly say he’ll replace his human grunts outright, putting two and two together as he explains how the AI technology will pan out — or looking at literally any company that has bragged about onboarding AI models — makes the implications for people’s jobs pretty clear. “In the beginning …

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. Liz Pelletier Named Publishers Weekly Person of the Year Pelletier had an excellent case to be named PW’s Person of the Year in 2023, as Fourth Wing burst into the reading world (though hard to argue with last year’s honorees either). The citation offers a bit of a profile of Pelletier, as well as some good backstory to Yarros’ romantasy titan. (If you like stuff like this, my interview with some of the folks at Red Tower on First Edition might be worth a listen). Colleen Hoover’s 2-3 year run atop the sales charts didn’t have much in the way of coattails; what has made Fourth Wing different is that has given rise not just to more books like it, but whole new imprints, series, packaging, and careers. Google-Backed AI Startup Announces Plans to Stop Grooming Teenagers

Google-Backed AI Startup Announces Plans to Stop Grooming Teenagers

Content warning: this story discusses sexual abuse, self-harm, suicide, eating disorders and other disturbing topics. Earlier this week, Futurism reported that two families in Texas had filed a lawsuit accusing the Google-backed AI chatbot company Character.AI of sexually and emotionally abusing their school-aged children. The plaintiffs alleged that the startup’s chatbots encouraged a teenage boy to cut himself and sexually abused an 11-year-old girl. The troubling accusations highlight the highly problematic content being hosted on Character.AI. Chatbots hosted by the company, we’ve found in previous investigations, have engaged underage users on alarming topics including pedophilia, eating disorders, self-harm, and suicide. Now, seemingly in reaction to the latest lawsuit, the company has promised to prioritize “teen safety.” In a blog post published today, the venture says that it has “rolled out a suite of new safety features across nearly every aspect of our platform, designed especially with teens in mind.” Character.AI is hoping to improve the situation by tweaking its AI models and improving its “detection and intervention systems for human behavior and model responses,” in addition to introducing new parental control …

Voicemod announces Key gaming console voice-changing tech

Voicemod announced today that it’s launching a new hardware device: Key, a dongle that allows console gamers to use the company’s voice-changing technology. It works with both PlayStation and Xbox console-based voice chats, as well as Discord on-console. It’s currently available to purchase along with a Voicemod Pro subscription — users who already have a subscription get a discounted price. The Key works by connecting to a smartphone or tablet via a USB-C or lightning port, which allows users to control their voice-changer and soundboard via a handheld device. They then plug their console and headset to the dongle itself. Content creators and streamers, as well as regular gamers can modify their voices, either for entertainment purposes or for privacy. According to Voicemod, its Key is the first hardware of its kind that allows console gamers access to the same voice-changing tech as PC gamers have had for some time. Key contains a library of AI-generated voice imprints for users to choose, along with over 300,000 sounds. Users can seamlessly switch between the voices at …
