GOP’s ambitious budget plan faces internal divisions

Republican senators warn incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s (R-S.D.) ambitious proposal to tackle President-elect Trump’s agenda faces an array of disagreements within their party over strategy and policy. Republican senators are broadly amenable to moving quickly on a budget reconciliation bill that would provide funding to complete construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall, to… Source link

The Knowledge. How ambitious is Labour on work experience?

The Knowledge. How ambitious is Labour on work experience?

More from this theme Recent articles Last week, the Social Market Foundation published a fascinating report, Things worth knowing, which looks at the role of ‘assumed knowledge’ in youth transitions from education to employment. Their evidence shows that young people from more privileged backgrounds and those with graduate parents appear more confident and adept at navigating their way through the education system into careers. Nick Brook, CEO of Speakers for Schools, which supported the study, highlighted that one of the most effective ways of filling pupils’ gaps in knowledge of the world of work is through quality work experience. At The Key Group, we agree that giving pupils access to the workplace is essential to their success. But our report on the national state of work experience, published this week,  indicates that less than half of pupils do even one week’s work experience. Nearly 7,000 schools in England now use Arbor as their management information system (MIS). Working with the attendance data that Arbor collects, we have gained insights at a national level around work …

Why ambitious leaders may not be as effective as they think

Why ambitious leaders may not be as effective as they think

Ambition may help individuals rise to leadership positions, but does it make them better leaders? A new study published in PNAS Nexus suggests not. The research shows that although ambitious leaders often rate themselves as effective, third-party evaluations from colleagues and subordinates indicate that ambition is not a strong indicator of leadership success. This disconnect highlights the potential flaws in relying on self-selection for leadership roles. The researchers were motivated to explore the assumption that ambitious individuals—those who actively seek leadership roles—are also likely to be more effective leaders. Leadership roles often come with substantial personal, financial, and professional rewards, so it’s common for ambitious people to strive for these positions. Many organizations rely on self-selection, meaning that individuals put themselves forward for leadership roles, but this practice assumes that those with the drive to lead are the best candidates for the job. However, this belief hadn’t been rigorously tested. “Leaders are critical to the success of individuals, teams, organizations, and society at large. Yet, human beings often struggle to select the best leaders,” explained …

Brady Corbet, Adrien Brody Discuss Ambitious Epic The Brutalist

Brady Corbet, Adrien Brody Discuss Ambitious Epic The Brutalist

The Venice Film Festival is buzzing over director Brady Corbet’s monumental historical drama The Brutalist, starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce. The film won’t officially premiere until Sunday night, but the thunderous applause and rapt excitement that followed the film out of its first press screenings on the Lido has many festival-goers speculating that it’s the movie to beat for this year’s Golden Lion.  With a 3.5-hour runtime and a ten-minute intermission in the middle, the film has all the thematic heft and intellectual rigor befitting its subject: the historical trauma and artistic vision that gave rise to the great works of mid-century American Brutalist architecture.  The Brutalist chronicles the journey of Hungarian-born Jewish architect, László Tóth (Brody), who emigrates to the United States in 1947 to experience the “American dream.” Initially forced to toil in poverty, he soon wins a contract with a mysterious and wealthy client, Harrison Lee Van Buren (Pearce), that will change the course of the next 30 years of his life. Jones co-stars as Tóth’s wife Erzsébet while Joe Alwyn plays the rich …

King Charles is feeling ambitious and wants to ride his horse at Trooping the Colour, says | Royal | News

King Charles is planning to “lead from the front” at this year’s Trooping the Colour, as long as it’s “with the agreement of royal doctors,” reports The Daily Beast. Trooping the Coulour, also known as the King’s Birthday Parade, is in honour of the sovereign. Charles’s actual birthday is on November 14, but there is a tradition put in place to celebrate the reigning monarch’s birthday in June, to take advantage of the warm weather, and so the public can take part in the celebration. It was already confirmed that Charles planned to attend the event, but at that time, it was made known he would not be on horseback for fear of injury, but it appears there’s been a change of heart. “He’s been quite clear that he is raring to go,” says an insider, when speaking to The Sun. While it isn’t mandatory for him to arrive on horseback, his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II “did stand down when she was 60,” says the source, but if the royal doctors sign off on …

Iran will check Erdogan’s ambitious goals in Iraq, experts say

Iran will check Erdogan’s ambitious goals in Iraq, experts say

Kirkuk, Iraq/Washington —  Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has agreed with Iraqi officials to expand bilateral relations, an attempt that experts say will be challenged by neighbor Iran, which has established significant political clout in Iraq. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said at a joint news conference with Erdogan on Monday that the 26 memorandums of understanding he signed that day provided a “road map for sustainable cooperation” between Iraq and Turkey. Erdogan, on his first visit to Iraq in 13 years, hailed the memorandums. “I believe that my visit and the agreements we signed will be a turning point in the relations between Iraq and Turkey,” he said. The documents address key issues between the two countries, including security, water management and trade. The two leaders also witnessed the signing of preliminary agreements among Iraq, Turkey, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on a 1,200-kilometer highway and railway project known as the Development Road Project, which would connect the Persian Gulf countries to Turkey and Europe through Iraq. However, some experts are skeptical …

Labour can afford to be far more ambitious with its economic policies – voters are on board

Labour can afford to be far more ambitious with its economic policies – voters are on board

To say that the Labour party is flying high in the polls is something of an understatement. But despite its consistent lead against the Tories, the opposition finds itself in a rather odd position: on the cusp of power but without a clear transformative vision of what it will actually do in office. The risk is that Labour will win but also lose the next general election. It may win in the sense of gaining a large majority, but it may also quickly lose public support due to the absence of any defining vision and associated policy programme capable of transforming people’s lives. A win under this scenario is effectively by default. A disillusioned public appears to be ready to vote for the other side because they think the party of government has run out of puff. But that public can quickly become disillusioned with Labour if it fails to address the structural weaknesses that blight people’s lives. To stay in power, Labour needs to deliver quickly. Labour has five missions as its election pledge …

Far right’s rise in Portugal could threaten ambitious climate action | Portugal

Far right’s rise in Portugal could threaten ambitious climate action | Portugal

Portugal has been among Europe’s more ambitious countries in terms of climate action, but the rise of the far right in recent elections could threaten the positive steps the country has taken. At the end of 2023, Portugal broke records as it went for six consecutive days relying solely on renewable energy. But national elections in March this year marked a significant shift in the political landscape, with the far-right party Chega (Enough) making a major breakthrough. Having more than quadrupled its number of MPs from 12 to 50, Chega holds considerable sway in the 230-seat parliament, where it could influence legislation. Although it won the election, the centre-right Democratic Alliance, led by the new prime minister, Luis Montenegro, won only 80 seats, while the centre-left Socialist party, which has governed Portugal for the past eight years, secured 78. In June, European citizens cast their votes for the new European parliament. There have been predictions of the far right aligning with traditional rightwing factions, posing a threat to climate and environmental policies. Chega had hoped …

Mayor Bass’ ambitious housing program calls on L.A.’s wealthy. Can she pull it off?

Mayor Bass’ ambitious housing program calls on L.A.’s wealthy. Can she pull it off?

Los Angeles has always been a city of extremes, but the homelessness crisis is exposing the divide between rich and poor in startling ways. A-listers in designer gowns and million-dollar jewels parade down the red carpet, blocks from tents where people live in unsanitary conditions. Private jets take off at Van Nuys Airport, soaring over streets lined with RVs and crowded apartment complexes. Rising housing prices are turbocharging the finances of homeowners while leaving others unable to afford a roof over their heads. Now, Mayor Karen Bass is calling on L.A.’s wealthy residents to help narrow that economic chasm with a new initiative that will rely on private donations and loans to buy apartments for the city’s unhoused, who at last count numbered more than 46,000. Philanthropic and real estate leaders reacted with hope and skepticism to the initiative, LA4LA, which Bass unveiled Monday during her State of the City address. LA4LA will target corporations and foundations as well as individuals. While Bass’ allies applauded her work on homelessness, others privately questioned how far the …

Govt’s funded childcare rollout branded ‘really ambitious game’ – as ‘85,000 new places needed’ | UK News

About 85,000 places need to be created for the expansion of funded childcare by September 2025, the government has estimated – but campaigners warned the scheme is a “really ambitious game”. While publishing projections of how many more staff and places would be needed to meet the government’s plans for extended childcare, the Department for Education (DfE) also estimated an additional 40,000 staff would have to be hired by September 2025 – compared with 2023. A pilot will be launched in the summer to explore how unused spaces in schools could be adopted as childcare settings, the DfE said. The planned childcare policy would see working families in England having access to 30 hours of free childcare per week for children aged between nine months and four years old, where all adults in the household work at least 16 hours. The policy had previously only applied to the parents of three and four-year-olds. As part of a staggered rollout of the childcare policy, working parents of two-year-olds have been able to access 15 hours of …
