How Data Can Appear in Science Papers — Out of Thin Air!

Recently, Retraction Watch, a site that helps keeps science honest, noted some statistical peculiarities about a paper last September in the Journal of Clean Energy, “Green innovations and patents in OECD countries.” The site was tipped off by a PhD student in economics that “For several countries, observations for some of the variables the study tracked were completely absent.” But that wasn’t the big surprise. The big surprise was when the student wrote to one of the authors: In email correspondence seen by Retraction Watch and a follow-up Zoom call, [Almas] Heshmati told the student he had used Excel’s autofill function to mend the data. He had marked anywhere from two to four observations before or after the missing values and dragged the selected cells down or up, depending on the case. The program then filled in the blanks. If the new numbers turned negative, Heshmati replaced them with the last positive value Excel had spit out. “No data? No problem! … But it got worse. Heshmati’s data, which the student convinced him to share, …

‘Safe’ air-quality levels in US, UK and EU still harmful for health, study says | Air pollution

‘Safe’ air-quality levels in US, UK and EU still harmful for health, study says | Air pollution

The sooty air pollution spewed out by cars, trucks and factories is causing widespread harm to people’s hearts and lungs even with the smallest amounts of exposure, with government regulations still routinely allowing for dangerous risks to public health, two major new studies have found. There is no safe amount of a microscopic form of airborne pollution known as PM2.5, consisting of tiny particles of soot measuring less than the width of a human hair, for heart and lung health, US researchers found, with even small amounts raising the risk of potentially serious problems. In one of the studies, an analysis of 60 million people in the US aged 65 and older from 2000 to 2016 found there was an increased risk of hospitalization for seven major types of cardiovascular disease when exposed to the average levels of PM2.5 found in the US. The increased level of risk is significant, with the average pollution amount in the US causing the risk of hospital admission to jump by 29%, or nearly a third, compared with the …

Air Pollution Is a Creeping Tax on American Life

Air Pollution Is a Creeping Tax on American Life

It feels like a sin against the sanctitude of being alive to put a dollar value on one year of a human life. A year spent living instead of dead is obviously priceless, beyond the measure of something so unprofound as money. But it gets a price tag in the world of economic models. Different agencies and organizations use different estimates—no one can seem to agree on the precise going rate. But according to the Environmental Protection Agency, a statistical lifetime is valued at about $11.5 million in 2024 dollars. By one new analysis, that translates to about $250,000 per year of living. That’s important to know, because the EPA is in the business of calculating how much money is lost or saved by preventing people’s early demise through various environmental regulations. Making contaminated water safer and dirty air cleaner costs money, but the country also benefits financially by keeping people alive. In the EPA’s own language, the agency simply estimates how much people are willing to pay to reduce their risk of dying from …

‘Tribute to ordinary people’: Ukraine drama In Her Car to air across Europe | Ukraine

It was while driving his family and others to the relative safety of Kyiv at the start of the full-blown Russian invasion of Ukraine that Eugen Tunik came up with the idea for a wartime on-the-road TV drama. “Train and bus stations became overcrowded and people couldn’t easily move around, so a lot of people, including myself, suddenly became so-called ‘transporters’, helping to carry people abroad or to wherever they needed to get to,” the writer said. “It’s a good opportunity to get to know your fellow human beings and to understand them better. And while on one of these journeys, I thought, why not develop this idea further?” The result of that spring 2022 epiphany is the 10-part television series, In Her Car, filmed in Ukraine, in which a forthright, stoical psychologist ferries people to safety in her slate-blue Škoda. It may be set in wartime, but a military drama this is not: Tunik calls it “a tribute to ordinary people and how they cope with the reality of war”. Watch the trailer for …

EU cuts toxic air limits but still falls short of WHO guidelines | Air pollution

EU cuts toxic air limits but still falls short of WHO guidelines | Air pollution

The European Union has agreed to set stricter limits on the toxic particles and dangerous gas that dirty its air, but will not aim for the levels that doctors and economists recommend. The new rules slash the yearly limits for fine particulates known as PM2.5 – which wreak havoc on the whole body because they are small enough to slip into the bloodstream – from 25 µg/m³ to 10 µg/m³, and for nitrogen dioxide, a gas that hurts the lungs, from 40 µg/m³ to 20 µg/m³. But the 2030 targets still allow twice as much pollution as the guideline levels set by the World Health Organization. The EU environment commissioner, Virginijus Sinkevičius, said the upgrade set Europe on track to make air pollution a problem of the past. “Air pollution is still the number one environmental health problem in the EU. The good news is that clean air policy works, and our air quality is improving.” The law, which must be formally adopted before it comes into effect, was watered down to include loopholes that …

Rise of fast-fashion Shein, Temu roils global air cargo industry

Rise of fast-fashion Shein, Temu roils global air cargo industry

NEW YORK/SHANGHAI: The rapid rise of fast-fashion e-commerce retailers such as Shein and Temu is upending the global air cargo industry, as they increasingly vie for limited air-cargo space to woo consumers with rapid transit times, more than ten industry sources said. Shein, PDD Group’s Temu and ByteDance’s TikTok Shop, which recently began online shopping in the US, ship the majority of their products directly from factories in China to shoppers by air in individually addressed packages. And their growing popularity – Shein and Temu together send almost 600,000 packages to the United States every day, according to a June 2023 report by the US Congress – is boosting air-freight costs from Asian hubs like Guangzhou and Hong Kong, making off-peak seasons almost disappear and causing capacity shortages, the sources said. “The biggest trend impacting air freight right now is not the Red Sea, it’s Chinese e-commerce companies like Shein or Temu,” said Basile Ricard, director of Greater China operations at freight forwarder Bollore Logistics. According to data aggregated by Cargo Facts Consulting, Temu ships …
