Our research on dark web forums reveals the growing threat of AI-generated child abuse images

The UK aims to be the first country in the world to create new offences related to AI-generated sexual abuse. New laws will make it illegal to possess, create or distribute AI tools designed to generate child sexual abuse material (CSAM), punishable by up to five years in prison. The laws will also make it illegal for anyone to possess so-called “paedophile manuals” which teach people how to use AI to sexually abuse children. In the last few decades, the threat against children from online abuse has multiplied at a concerning rate. According to the Internet Watch Foundation, which tracks down and removes abuse from the internet, there has been an 830% rise in online child sexual abuse imagery since 2014. The prevalence of AI image generation tools is fuelling this further. Last year, we at the International Policing and Protection Research Institute at Anglia Ruskin University published a report on the growing demand for AI-generated child sexual abuse material online. Researchers analysed chats that took place in dark web forums over the previous 12 …

AI-generated optical illusions can sort humans from bots

AI-generated optical illusions can sort humans from bots

An AI-generated image of a city skyline and a man’s face – but AIs are unable to see both Ziqi Ding et al. (2025) Artificial intelligence programs can create optical illusions that other AIs are unable to recognise, creating a useful CAPTCHA test to differentiate humans from bots. A cat-and-mouse game has played out for almost two decades between website developers who want to keep bots out of their sites and the hackers who want to bypass those protections. Websites have long deployed tests that are designed to be easy for humans to pass, but that trip up software. Source link

Amazon Mocked for Slapping AI-Generated Poster on Beloved 1922 Film “Nosferatu”

Amazon Mocked for Slapping AI-Generated Poster on Beloved 1922 Film “Nosferatu”

In an astonishing feat of laziness, Amazon Prime Video service has adorned the iconic 1922 horror film “Nosferatu” with a slapdash poster that was obviously generated using AI. The poster — first discovered by eagle-eyed netizens last fall and resurfaced as Robert Eggers’ remake of the beloved classic wows critics in theaters — turns the vampire Count Orlok’s monstrous visage into a yassified rendition with a strangely slender body, his harrowing appearance replaced with an aesthetic straight out of a “Twilight” movie. To add suck further blood out of the original’s legacy, its iconic use of typography was exchanged for a font that closely resembles Papyrus, a typeface so widely hated that it spawned its own series of “Saturday Night Live” sketches. In other words, it’s exactly the kind of uninspired slop you’d expect an AI image generator to spit out. It’s a sign of the times — highlighting a worrying trend as companies like Amazon continue to undermine the work of human artists by leaning into cheapo AI. The online reaction to the insipid art …

Apple Faces Criticism Over AI-Generated News Headline Summaries

Apple Faces Criticism Over AI-Generated News Headline Summaries

Apple is facing calls to remove its AI-powered notification summaries feature after it generated false headlines about a high-profile murder case, drawing criticism from a major journalism organization. Updated to iOS 18.2? Then you may have received this notification (image credit: BBC News) Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has urged Apple to disable the Apple Intelligence notification feature, which rolled out globally last week as part of its iOS 18.2 software update. The request comes after the feature created a misleading headline suggesting that murder suspect Luigi Mangione had shot himself, incorrectly attributing the false information to BBC News. Mangione in fact remains under maximum security at Huntingdon State Correctional Institution in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, after having been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of healthcare insurance CEO Brian Thompson in New York. The BBC has confirmed that it filed a complaint with Apple regarding the headline incident. The RSF has since argued that summaries of the type prove that “generative AI services are still too immature to produce reliable information for the public.” Vincent …

artificial intelligence: A type of knowledge-based decision-making exhibited by machines or computers. The term also refers to the field of study in which scientists try to create machines or computer software capable of intelligent behavior. bot: (short for web robot) A computer program designed to appear that its actions come from some human. The goal is to have it interact with people or perform automated tasks such as finding and sharing online information through social-media accounts. chatbot: A computer program created to seemingly converse with human users. Modern ones (such as Siri, Alexa, Ocelot and Sprinklr) can retrieve information over the internet about news events or classroom topics. Many even work as digital assistants to answer questions about purchases, products or scheduling on behalf of stores, pharmacies or banks. code: (in computing) To use special language to write or revise a program that makes a computer do something. (n.) Code also refers to each of the particular parts of that programming that instructs a computer’s operations. colleague: Someone who works with another; a co-worker or …

Barbers Alarmed When Customers Start Asking for AI-Generated Haircuts

Barbers Alarmed When Customers Start Asking for AI-Generated Haircuts

“Usually it’s got a sheen.” Taper Expectations Most of us are probably guilty of having unrealistic expectations for how our haircuts should look. Showing your barber a photo of David Beckham, sadly, does not mean you will strut out the shop looking like the iconic soccer champion. That being said, bringing a photo of a real human to your hair appointment is definitely more practical than what some people are turning to now, according to stylists: AI-generated images. Dean Allan, the owner of a beauty salon in Edmonton, Alberta tells the CBC that it’s becoming more and more common for clients to instead show him an image generated by a machine learning model. “Usually it’s got a sheen,” Allan told the broadcaster. “It’s thicker than the average person’s hair.” Cut Below The saving grace, Allan said, is that most people are still able to tell that the photos aren’t real, at least for now. But “I think they’re just gonna get better,” he told the CBC. The expectations they create, nonetheless, can be very unrealistic in every …

People can’t tell the difference between human and AI-generated poetry – new study

People can’t tell the difference between human and AI-generated poetry – new study

Has the bell finally tolled for Shakespeare and Byron? New research conducted by philosophers of science Brian Porter and Edouard Machery suggests that the latest AI-generated poetry is “indistinguishable from human-written poetry” and “rated more favourably”. Ten poets, from the medieval Geoffrey Chaucer to modern writer Dorothea Lasky, were successfully impersonated by AI chatbots, with most of the 696 participants slightly preferring the imitation to the real thing. Porter and Machery conclude that “the capabilities of generative AI models have outpaced people’s expectations of AI”. But they don’t say AI has been proven an adequate replacement for human poets – and rightly so, as such a conclusion would require a great deal more testing. That the research participants were fooled is not particularly worrying. Porter and Machery set out to include a wide range of poem types, which meant choosing poets who mostly belong to ages past. In such cases, modern readers are likely to have a hard time looking past the obvious signs of antiquity – outdated diction, rigid formalism, and obscure cultural references. …

This AI-generated Minecraft may represent the future of real-time video generation

This AI-generated Minecraft may represent the future of real-time video generation

“What if you could say ‘Hey, add a flying unicorn here’? Literally, talk to the model. Or ‘Turn everything here into medieval ages,’ and then, boom, it’s all medieval ages. Or ‘Turn this into Star Wars,’ and it’s all Star Wars,” says Leitersdorf. A major limitation right now is hardware. They relied on Nvidia cards for their current demo, but in the future, they plan to use Sohu, a new card that Etched has in development, which the firm claims will improve performance by a factor of 10. This gain would significantly cut down on the cost and energy needed to produce real-time interactive video. It would allow Decart and Etched to make a better version of their current demo, allowing the game to run longer, with fewer hallucinations, and at higher resolution. They say the new chip would also make it possible for more players to use the model at once. “Custom chips for AI hold the potential to unlock significant performance gains and energy efficiency gains,” says Siddharth Garg, a professor of electrical …

AI-generated child abuse images increasing at ‘chilling’ rate – as watchdog warns it is now becoming hard to spot | Science & Tech News

The amount of AI-generated child abuse images found on the internet is increasing at a “chilling” rate, according to a national watchdog. The Internet Watch Foundation deals with child abuse images online, removing hundreds of thousands every year. Now, it says artificial intelligence is making the work much harder. “I find it really chilling as it feels like we are at a tipping point,” said “Jeff”, a senior analyst at the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), who uses a fake name at work to protect his identity. In the last six months, Jeff and his team have dealt with more AI-generated child abuse images than the preceding year, reporting a 6% increase in the amount of AI content. A lot of the AI imagery they see of children being hurt and abused is disturbingly realistic. “‘Whereas before we would be able to definitely tell what is an AI image, we’re reaching the point now where even a trained analyst […] would struggle to see whether it was real or not,” Jeff told Sky News. In order …
