‘Nobody seems interested’ in helping Rudy Giuliani with accounting duties in bankruptcy case, lawyers claim

Rudy Giuliani is having a hard time finding someone to help with the accounting duties in his bankruptcy case and may have to do it on his own, lawyers said in a filing Tuesday. According to the filing, Giuliani had an accountant helping him meet the accounting obligations in the case, but “he had a change of heart and indicated that he no longer wished to help prepare the monthly operating reports.” Giuliani has reached out to “a number of accounting firms” for their help, “however, no one seems interested in taking the assignment.” Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, filed for bankruptcy in December, just days after a jury ordered him to pay a staggering $148 million to two former Georgia election workers who he falsely claimed committed election fraud in 2020. In the months leading up to his bankruptcy filing, Giuliani defended against increasing legal troubles for his role in former President Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. The filing Tuesday was meant to explain why Giuliani had not filed …

Trump Media hires new auditor after accounting firm charged with fraud

Omar Marques | Lightrocket | Getty Images Trump Media hired a new auditor over the weekend, after its previous public accounting firm was accused Friday of perpetrating a massive fraud by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Truth Social owner fired BF Borgers CPA after the SEC accused the firm of failing to perform actual audits of its clients, before signing off on more than 1,500 regulatory filings for public companies. Trump Media said it had engaged Semple, Marchal & Cooper LLP on Saturday to replace BF Borgers. As part of its settlement with the regulator, BF Borgers and its owner agreed to a permanent ban from auditing public companies. The ban required Trump Media and other public companies that had used BF Borgers to find new auditors. “The decision to change independent registered public accounting firms was made with the recommendation and approval of the Audit Committee of the Company,” Trump Media said Monday in an 8-K filing to announce its new auditor. Former President Donald Trump owns 65% of Trump Media’s stock, which …

Calls increase for Israeli accounting for Gaza airstrike

Calls increase for Israeli accounting for Gaza airstrike

More calls came Thursday for Israel to account for its airstrike on a convoy in Gaza that killed seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen. U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were expected to speak Thursday in their first phone call since the attack. U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters Wednesday Israel needs better measures in place to protect humanitarian workers and civilians. World Central Kitchen said Thursday it asked Australia, Britain, Canada, Poland and the United States to demand “an independent, third-party investigation into these attacks, including whether they were carried out intentionally or otherwise violated international law.” Those killed in Monday’s attack included a Palestinian, three British citizens, a Polish citizen, an Australian and a Canadian-American dual citizen. “An independent investigation is the only way to determine the truth of what happened, ensure transparency and accountability for those responsible, and prevent future attacks on humanitarian aid workers,” World Central Kitchen said in a statement. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters Thursday that Israel’s response has not …

Mike Lynch trial: defense points to difference in accounting standards | Autonomy

Mike Lynch trial: defense points to difference in accounting standards | Autonomy

Lawyers for Mike Lynch tried to highlight differences between UK and US accounting standards as they defended the British businessman against allegations he orchestrated a “massive” years-long fraud. Lynch, who founded and led Autonomy, a UK software firm, is fighting to avoid prison after federal prosecutors in the US charged him with 16 counts of wire fraud, securities fraud and conspiracy. His criminal trial started in San Francisco on Monday. Autonomy was bought by Hewlett-Packard in an $11.1bn (£8.72bn) takeover in 2011, which quickly unraveled after HP wrote down the value of its purchase by $8.8bn and alleged “serious accounting improprieties” and misrepresentations at Autonomy. Lynch, who was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2018 and extradited to the US in May 2023, has pleaded not guilty. As the US government started building its case against Lynch this week, it summoned Ganesh Vaidyanathan, a former accounting director at Autonomy in the US, as its first witness. Questioned by prosecutors, Vaidyanathan testified about potential accounting issues he first raised inside the company in 2010. …

Thousands of Gazans have gone missing. No one is accounting for them.

Thousands of Gazans have gone missing. No one is accounting for them.

JERUSALEM — A teenager who sold cigarettes. A singer on the rise. An engineer at a local bottling plant. They are among thousands who have been reported missing in Gaza. Many disappeared under the rubble after airstrikes. Others are believed to have been detained at Israeli checkpoints while fleeing south or trying to return to the north. Some simply left one day and never came back. Their desperate families search hospitals and contact hotlines set up by International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). They scour photos of bodies in the streets and of blindfolded men detained by Israeli forces. They share pictures of relatives online, pleading for leads. From October through February, the ICRC received reports of 5,118 Palestinians missing in Gaza. The Washington Post interviewed 15 people who lost contact with friends and family in Gaza since Oct. 7 — in only two cases were they able to find them. The most painful part, many said, was being in the dark about their fate. “We hoped that we would succeed in getting even …

Tesla is now accounting for ‘battery age’ in its range calculation

Tesla is now accounting for ‘battery age’ in its range calculation

Tesla is now starting to account for “battery age” in its estimated range calculation for its electric vehicles. I have long been advocating for prioritizing accurate range prediction over a longer range in curbing range anxiety. Don’t get me wrong, a longer range can be useful, but if you know what where you are going, the main thing is that you know you can get there and your range doesn’t start dropping faster than anticipated. Range calculations are difficult regardless of the type of powertrain – electric or internal combustion engine. There are just so many factors that can affect the efficiency of a vehicle on a road that it is hard to determine how far it can go on a full battery pack or tank of gas. Tesla has been a leader in efficiency and long-range electric vehicles for a long time, but despite that, it still has issues predicting the energy consumption of a trip. When entering a destination in the navigation system, Tesla gives the driver the expected range remaining at the …

Tories Compared To Unpopular Fujitsu Accounting Machine

Tories Compared To Unpopular Fujitsu Accounting Machine

A Tory minister was left squirming after being told his party is “about as liked as a Fujitsu accounting machine. The jibe – a reference to the Post Office Horizon IT scandal – by LBC’s Nick Ferrari came as the opinion polls continue to show the Conservatives languishing well behind Labour. The radio presenter asked Treasury minister Gareth Davies: “Why do you suppose the Conservatives are about as liked as a Fujitsu accounting machine?” A clearly-flustered Davies replied: “Well, er, polls come and go as you know.” But Ferrari told him: “They’re only going one way here, Mr Davies, and they’re going consistently down.” The minister said: “Well, look, I’m not naive. Obviously we’d like the polls to look differently than they are today, and I am very confident that they will as we go into a general election. “But what we are focused on is that we stick with our plan for managing the economy.” Ferrari told him: “But it’s not working, is it? This is insanity. If week in, week out, the polls …

Post Office scandal: The story behind victims of faulty Horizon accounting software | UK News

The Post Office scandal is coming under renewed scrutiny following a TV drama into how a computerised accounting system ruined the lives for many staff and their families. More than 700 Post Office branch managers were given criminal convictions after faulty Fujitsu accounting software – called Horizon – made it appear as though money was missing from their shops. Justice Secretary Alex Chalk and postal minister Kevin Hollinrake will discuss the scandal in the wake of renewed scrutiny following the conclusion of the four-part ITV drama, Mr Bates Vs The Post Office. Lord Arbuthnot, who was an MP at the time of the scandal, told Sky News: “One of the greatest problems is that there have been between 700 and 900 convictions of sub-postmasters and only 93 have been overturned. “That is an awfully small, pathetically small, number.” Latest updates – sub-postmasters ‘failed by virtually every sector of society’ Here, we look at some of the circumstances and responses of some of the victims of the Horizon scandal. Carbon Maps, a carbon accounting startup for the food industry, gets new backers

Carbon Maps, a carbon accounting startup for the food industry, gets new backers

Carbon Maps is a relatively new entrant in the carbon accounting space as it is less than one year old. But the French company has already secured $7.6 million in funding (€7 million) following the startup’s €3 million seed round extension. I already covered Carbon Maps back in February, so I encourage you to read this previous article to get the full story. But I wanted to share an update as the company managed to convince Daphni to participate in the seed round. Carbon Maps had already raised €4 million ($4.3 million at today’s exchange rate) from Breega and Samaipata. As a reminder, Carbon Maps is building a software-as-a-service platform focused on the environmental impact of the food industry. Unlike other carbon accounting startups, Carbon Maps focuses on one industry in particular and helps companies calculate their environmental footprint at the product-level. “The first step in improving our impact on the environment is to measure and track it accurately. We are convinced that only a pure player like Carbon Maps has the capacity to do …
