Lady Louise and James’s milestone moments to be marked by heartbreaking absence

Lady Louise Windsor and her brother James, Earl of Wessex are the youngest grandchildren of the late Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip.  Whilst being the youngest often comes with excellent perks such as having your elder cousins to guide you, there is one thing about their rank that is incredibly bittersweet.  © UK Press via Getty ImagesLady Louise had an exceptionally close relationship with her grandparents Should the pair respectively find love and choose to marry, they will be the only grandchildren of the late monarch not to have their grandparents at their future weddings.  The last of the Queen’s grandchildren to her attend their nuptials was Princess Beatrice in 2020 when she had a socially distanced wedding during the pandemic.  © Getty ImagesShould Lady Louise and James choose to marry they will be the only royal cousins who won’t have their late grandparents at their weddings Prince Philip was also at the ceremony along with only Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli-Mozzi’s parents and siblings. At a Department for Education attendance conference near Newcastle this week, Catherine McKinnell MP, the Minister of State for School Standards, praised school leaders for “your leadership, your perseverance, your determination and your commitment, in the face of what is a big challenge”. The north east has higher absence rates than any other English region. During breakout sessions, leaders revealed their efforts to bring absences down, including one approach that involved attendance officers starting at 7.30am to listen through voicemails of parents excusing their child, collating data into postcodes and heading out at 8am to visit homes. Other ideas included asking children to bring in work they …

Five ways to develop a place-based response to absence

Five ways to develop a place-based response to absence

More from this theme Recent articles In Rochdale, headteachers like me lead our schools with a clear commitment to our locality and the needs of our learners. Our dedication to Raising Rochdale’s ‘grow up, get on and live well’ initiative is paramount to our values as educators. Forty per cent of children live in poverty in our region – one of the highest rates in the UK. At Matthew Moss High School, our proportion of free-school-meal-eligible (FSM) students, students with EHCPs and English as an additional language are all above the national average. Like so many others, we’ve faced significant barriers to attendance. For us, valuing how our families experience belonging in our locality is crucial to how we understand and address absence challenges. Over the past two years, we’ve further supported vulnerable children drawing on Rochdale’s involvement in the LocalED 2025 initiative. Lifting the lid on attendance through needs-focused, holistic approaches like this has further highlighted to us the importance of trauma-informed support and prioritising the child’s voice. Our approach based on empathy, trust …

On Michelle Obama’s inauguration absence: No need to be phony or fake, there’s real work to do

On Michelle Obama’s inauguration absence: No need to be phony or fake, there’s real work to do

Michelle Obama is not going to the Trump inauguration because she is not a phony — great for her. I hope we take this as a lesson on the proper way to resist.  “Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies,” the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama said in a recent statement. “Former first lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration.” I can’t lie. I have never been more joyous after reading a statement from an elected official, because why go to that?  The trend of being a once-elected president and skipping the inauguration began with former President Donald and First Lady Melania Trump back when Biden beat them in 2020. As spectators and people who love this country, we called Trump out for his childish actions, using language like traitor and sore loser; however, I guarantee we will not be doing that to Mrs. Obama, because: “Who’s going to be there?”  “Who’s going to be there?” is a simple but extremely valuable lesson I learned from my late grandmother …
