Aberdeen: Hundreds of residents to be moved out of homes due to unsafe concrete | UK News

Hundreds of residents are to be moved out of their council homes in Aberdeen after the properties were found to contain potentially dangerous concrete panels. Around 500 homes in the city’s Balnagask area were identified as having reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) panels following an inspection last year, including 364 council properties of which 299 are occupied by tenants. Aberdeen City Council said it received an independent structural engineers’ report on 22 February with a recommendation to relocate council tenants to alternative accommodation “as soon as possible”. The council said its officers are “currently exploring options for the long-term viability for the site, which include remedial works or demolition”. A detailed appraisal is expected to be presented to the council within six months. The findings were considered by the local authority’s urgent business committee on Thursday. Councillors accepted a recommendation from officers that tenants be permanently rehomed. The committee asked officers to be available to engage with council tenants to “understand their individual needs and to support them through the next steps”. Read more from …

Anas Sarwar stands by oil tax plans after Aberdeen executives call him ‘traitor’ | Scotland

Anas Sarwar stands by oil tax plans after Aberdeen executives call him ‘traitor’ | Scotland

Anas Sarwar has shrugged off an attack on Labour’s oil tax plans after being called a “traitor” by Aberdeen business leaders. The Scottish Labour leader said the party would press on with its plans for a multibillion-pound windfall tax on oil profits, despite claims from more than 800 oil, engineering and business executives that the levy could cost up to 100,000 North Sea jobs. The Press & Journal newspaper in Aberdeen, the UK’s oil capital, surprised Labour officials by splashing “the traitors” on its front page on Thursday over photographs of Sarwar, Keir Starmer, Rachel Reeves and Ed Miliband, with an oil rig in the background. Starmer, Sarwar and Miliband met oil and engineering executives in Aberdeen several weeks ago seeking their support for Labour’s strategy to ramp up investment in low carbon energy and shift away from North Sea oil and gas. In a lengthy speech to Scottish Labour’s annual conference, Sarwar repeatedly defended the windfall tax proposal as a key measure in combating the cost of living crisis, with energy bills now 60% …

Warnock appointed Aberdeen manager until end of season

Aberdeen have appointed Neil Warnock as manager until the end of the season, the Scottish Premiership side said on Monday. Aberdeen parted ways with Barry Robson last week following a run of two draws and one defeat. Robson had been in charge since March 2023 after being caretaker for a second spell in January. “(Neil) has had an incredible career in management, not only in terms of volume of games and winning promotions, but also of coming into clubs at short notice and making an immediate impact,” said Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack. Warnock, 75, has coached a host of clubs including Leeds United, Crystal Palace and Queens Park Rangers in his near 45 year managerial career, with eight promotions. Aberdeen are eighth with 25 points from 22 games. They visit second-placed Rangers on Tuesday. Source link

Serial rapist James Henderson jailed for 14 years for spate of attacks in Dundee and Aberdeen | UK News

A serial rapist with “blasé attitude to violence” attacked women over a 13-year period. James Henderson, 45, has been jailed for 14 years after being found guilty of raping three women and attempting to rape a fourth. Judge Lady Haldane said Henderson’s criminal justice social work report made for “dispiriting reading” as he accepted no responsibility for his behaviour. Lady Haldane said: “You are recorded as saying that you do not trust women, and to have a blasé attitude to violence. “You appear to regard violence as acceptable and consider that no justification is required for resorting to violence.” Henderson’s assaults took place in Aberdeen and Dundee between 2008 and 2021. Lady Haldane said two of the women were raped repeatedly, and “all were, to a greater or lesser extent, vulnerable”. During Henderson’s trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, one victim described the abuse as “just continuous”. She said: “I know that he raped me that night, but then I would have sex with him to keep him happy. “It was just easier to …
