Lisa Ann Walter on Mother’s Day, Her ‘Abbott Elementary’ Bond With Sheryl Lee Ralph, and That Bette Midler Idea

Lisa Ann Walter on Mother’s Day, Her ‘Abbott Elementary’ Bond With Sheryl Lee Ralph, and That Bette Midler Idea

Did it feel different filming this episode at all, given the reversal in your dynamic and the connection you have over the loss of your mothers? Quinta knows that I have readily available emotions. In any scene where crying is easy for me, I can access it. When they wrote this, they knew that if we had to play that we had both lost our mothers, that it would be battle of the network tears. I don’t need to play that every time. [Laughs] So they gave it to Sheryl, and of course I could feel what her emotions were, but my character wasn’t feeling it. Melissa was intent on noticing what was happening and saying, “I see what’s going on, and you need to take a little step back. You’re hurting.” Do you feel more comfortable making suggestions for your character now that you’re in season three and have more of a dynamic with Quinta and the writers? How has that evolved? Always, from the beginning, it’s like working with a great repertory company. …

Janelle James on Questlove Cameo, Ava Clothing Line

Janelle James on Questlove Cameo, Ava Clothing Line

[This story contains spoilers from the April 17 episode of Abbott Elementary, “2 Ava 2 Fest.”] Ava Fest returned to Abbott Elementary for a second year in a row during Wednesday night’s “2 Ava 2 Fest” episode. But, unlike the first festival in season two of the ABC sitcom — where the wildly unqualified principal of Willard R. Abbott school pretended the name of the petition-signing effort stood for “A Very Abbott Festival” — this time around, she wastes no time professing her true intentions. “Of course it’s about Ava, what do you mean?” actress Janelle James, who portrays Ava in the Quinta Brunson comedy, asks facetiously. “She just wants to have a party, charge at the door, take half. What’s the big deal?” The big deal in the episode turns out to be Ava’s promise that Questlove will perform at the festival, which none of the teachers believe after she failed to book R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan the year prior. But in a surprising turn of events for everyone except the elementary school’s overconfident …

‘Abbott Elementary’ Cast Dish on How They Got Bradley Cooper to Guest Star on the Show (Exclusive)

‘Abbott Elementary’ Cast Dish on How They Got Bradley Cooper to Guest Star on the Show (Exclusive)

Abbott Elementary recently took center stage when they were given the coveted post-Oscars spot on ABC. To capitalize on the opportunity, the show managed to get Bradley Cooper to guest star as himself in a truly memorable cameo. At the 55th NAACP Image Awards on Saturday, ET’s Kevin Frazier spoke with some of the show’s stars about what it was like to welcome Cooper on set and how the whole cameo came together. Speaking with the show’s lead and creator, Quinta Brunson, backstage at the event, the actress and show-runner revealed how they managed to pull off the surprise appearance. “Bradley was really great,” Brunson shared. “Once we realized we had the Oscar episode and we had the opportunity to do something flashy, I wanted to do a flashy cold open. So I just kind of went to the roots of Abbott, which are, ‘Who’s from Philly? Who’s associated with the city?’ And Bradley’s a Philly boy, everyone knows him as being a great member of the city.” “So we kind of called and Bradley was …

Why That Big “Abbott Elementary” Cameo Made So Much Sense

Why That Big “Abbott Elementary” Cameo Made So Much Sense

As the show has gotten more popular, it hasn’t abandoned its distinct regional humor. Gilles Mingasson / Disney March 11, 2024, 5:37 PM ET Last night, Bradley Cooper basked in the warmth of an adoring audience. It didn’t happen at the 96th Academy Awards, where his film Maestro had been nominated in several categories—and ultimately went home winless. Instead, at the beginning of the latest Abbott Elementary episode, which aired immediately after the Oscars, Cooper sauntered into a Philadelphia classroom’s show-and-tell at the behest of a student who excitedly introduced him as “a famous person I saw outside.” The actor then explained why he was there in the first place: “Well, whenever I’m in Philly, you know the deli across the street? That’s my first stop. My dad used to always take me there.” Cooper’s cameo didn’t feel overpowering or forced; as it turns out, the student who requested that he come to the classroom didn’t even know who the actor was. (“Everybody wanted to take a picture with him, so I figured he was …

Sheryl Lee Ralph Says ‘Hell Yes’ to Joining Whoopi Goldberg in ‘Sister Act 3’ (Exclusive)

Sheryl Lee Ralph Says ‘Hell Yes’ to Joining Whoopi Goldberg in ‘Sister Act 3’ (Exclusive)

If fans were wondering if Sheryl Lee Ralph would make a cameo in the long-awaited Sister Act sequel being pushed by Whoopi Goldberg and Tyler Perry, the actress has a firm answer for you. “Hell yes!” Ralph tells ET at the 2024 SAG Awards, when asked if she plans to take Goldberg up on her invitation to return for the developing project that has been in the works since 2020. Earlier this month, when Ralph — who played Florence Watson in 1993’s Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit — visited The View to promote the third season of Abbott Elementary, Goldberg surprised the star by asking her to return for the third film. She also asked the Emmy winner to return to the show for an upcoming Sister Act cast reunion thrown by the show’s producers.  “Something that’s gonna happen here in order to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sister Act 2, the producers here at The View are working on putting together a reunion,” Goldberg told Ralph after the show aired a scene from the second film. “And we’re gonna try to get as many cast members on to …

Abbott Elementary Renewed for Season 4 at ABC

Abbott Elementary Renewed for Season 4 at ABC

Class will stay in session at Abbott Elementary. Mere days after returning with its strikes-delayed and supersized third season, the Quinta Brunson comedy has been renewed for a fourth season at ABC. The news was announced by co-star William Stanford Davis (aka Mr. Johnson) on Saturday at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, where he was a surprise guest during ABC’s time before the press corps. Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich also announced renewals for Celebrity Family Feud and Jeopardy Masters, as sources say Dancing With the Stars will also return for its 33rd season. Season three returned Wednesday with ratings that were on par with its sophomore debut (2.8 million total viewers and a 0.5 in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic for its first part and 2.7 million and a 0.5 for the latter). The comedy, which earned Brunson an Emmy, is a co-production between Disney’s 20th Television and Warner Bros. Television, where co-creators and co-showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker are housed with an overall deal. The Philly-set mockumentary was originally …

Daniel Radcliffe Says He’d Do A Rom-Com With Quinta Brunson

Daniel Radcliffe Says He’d Do A Rom-Com With Quinta Brunson

When asked who he’d want as his leading lady, he immediately named the Abbott Elementary creator. “Quinta Brunson; we should do something together,” he said. “And we’re a perfect height match, so really there’s a future in this.” Daniel and Quinta have actually worked together before, but it was more about comedy and less about romance. They appeared in the Emmy-winning TV movie Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a parody biopic about comedic musician “Weird Al” Yankovic. Daniel starred in the lead role, while Quinta played media mogul Oprah Winfrey. Quinta had a groundbreaking night at the Emmys on Monday. She landed the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy series for Abbott Elementary, becoming the first Black woman to win the category since Isabel Sanford scooped the same award in 1981 for The Jeffersons. “I love making Abbott Elementary so much, and I am so happy to be able to live my dream and act out comedy,” she said while fighting back tears.
