Drake v Kendrick Lamar’s rap beef has turned very ugly – who is benefiting from such a spectacle? | Nels Abbey

The sight of two (or more) people tearing chunks out of each other is one of humanity’s first and most enduring forms of entertainment. The sheer excitement, the intrigue, the unpredictability, the adrenaline rush, the bloodlust: who can resist? And in exchange for their courage, discipline and possibly even their lives, we reward our gladiators handsomely. It’s payday for the poetic, profit-seeking, pride-protecting feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, easily the landmark competitive event of our time. Rappers are our modern gladiators (and poet laureates). And thanks to social media and the fact that every major media organisation worth its salt – the BBC, the New York Times, the Guardian – has dedicated prominent real estate to cover and contextualise the beef blow-by-blow, track-by-track, the world is their colosseum. Are you not entertained? We see all the modern tools of warfare deployed: high- and low-tech espionage, infiltration of enemy camps, artificial intelligence (Drake released a record with AI-generated verses from Snoop Dogg and the late Tupac Shakur, both, like Lamar, west coast icons). There has …

Duchess Sophie Recreated the Iconic Beatles Abbey Road Cover on Her Way to a Charity Gala

Duchess Sophie Recreated the Iconic Beatles Abbey Road Cover on Her Way to a Charity Gala

On Wednesday, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, attended an important royal engagement in London, but she made some time to have fun on an iconic British streetscape. On her way to the Abbey Road Studios for an event, she stopped by the crosswalk where the Beatles shot the cover for their 1969 album Abbey Road. Wearing a scarlet dress by Beulah London, she emulated John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr by taking a few long steps as she crossed the street. Unlike the cover, however, she turned to the camera and flashed a smile. Following the photo op, she attended the second annual Orbis Visionaries Reception, representing the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. Sophie has been involved with charities related to blindness since her early days in the royal family, and has been the agency’s global representative since 2003. Though she has a personal connection with the issue—Sophie’s daughter Lady Louise Windsor was born with esotropia, which has since been surgically corrected—she first began working with charities for the visually impaired …

Kemi Badenoch should value diversity schemes. Attacking them does wonders for her career | Nels Abbey

Kemi Badenoch should value diversity schemes. Attacking them does wonders for her career | Nels Abbey

The lady is for turning. And contradicting too. The lady is Kemi Badenoch, the business secretary, minister for women and equalities, and now the Conservative party’s great Black hope. Which must come in handy as hope (with a dash of diversity-drenched “anti-wokeness”) appears to be the Tories’ only strategy to be remotely competitive at the next election. Or the one after that. Badenoch, the would-be PM, is on manoeuvres. Within a matter of days of assailing her own anti-liberal brand and shocking practically everyone by labelling Frank Hester’s obviously racist comments about Diane Abbott as racist, Badenoch quickly returned to form by dismissing the same comments as “trivia”. Now, to avoid the possibility that any single voter who might smooth her path to No 10 confuses her for an anti-racist activist, Badenoch has sharpened and sunk her teeth into the concept she is oft described as a Tory poster child for: diversity. On Wednesday, the minister unveiled, most noticeably via a front page in the Daily Telegraph, a report on workplace diversity titled Inclusion at …
