Hacked pupil records at Capita rise to more than 50k

A full investigation reveals more pupil records have been impacted than initially thought A full investigation reveals more pupil records have been impacted than initially thought More from this theme Recent articles Up to 20,000 more pupils’ data may have been stolen in a cyber-attack on the government outsourcer Capita. Schools Week previously revealed how 30,000 pupil personal data records were thought to have been taken when hackers targeted the company last year. Ninety organisations had reported breaches of personal data held by Capita, which runs primary school SATs for the Standards and Testing Agency (STA). However, in a freedom of information response, the Department for Education has revealed that after a full investigation, 50,780 pupil records were “affected”. This included names, dates of birth, unique pupil number, type of test taken and the schools’ DfE number.  This new figure “may have included duplicates”, the department said, so it was “unable to accurately determine the unique number of pupils that had their personal data compromised”.  The government refused to release the full investigation report as …

‘I joined 50k Tenerife protesters and they had clear message’ | World | News

The people of the Canary Islands came out in force to tell the world enough was enough today (April 20). Around 5 percent of the population of Tenerife pulled on yellow t-shirts in reference to the little bird with the same name to call for measures to tackle the overtourism which has blighted the island. Walking through the crowds the frustration at the way the island had lost control was immense, although when I spoke to some of the 50,000 they were clear this was not about telling tourists to “go home” as had previously been reported. “It’s not tourismphobia” a female protester shouted at me when I took a photo of her banner which said tourists were “killing” the island.  Portrayed as a battle, the march on the island’s capital was more of a plea. What the locals really want are fewer second homes, projections for nature and limits to new resorts. It was hard not to sympathise with people who are hearing their native language eroded to the point schools are now teaching …

Peru’s president accused of amassing $500k in jewelry on $50k salary

LIMA, Peru — Even given the low expectations Peruvians have for their leaders, Dina Boluarte was unpopular. For nearly all of her 16-month presidency, her approval ratings have languished in the single digits. She’s widely blamed for the deaths of nearly 50 people killed by security forces while they were protesting her predecessor’s ouster, and accused of standing by while lawmakers dismantle Peru’s democracy. Her transformation from running mate and vice president of the far-left president Pedro Castillo to a supposedly business-friendly, center-right head of state has left critics calling her a shameless opportunist with blood on her hands. Still, Boluarte, 61, a mid-level civil servant who became Peru’s first female president, had managed to avoid accusations of being personally corrupt. Until now. Her government has been rocked by reporting that in the past year she has amassed a personal jewelry collection worth $500,000 on a monthly presidential salary of around $4,200. Highlights allegedly include a $50,000 Cartier bracelet and a $19,000 Rolex watch. The bombshell revelations come from La Encerrona, a popular news podcast …

Renault 5 already has 50K orders on its waitlist

French automaker Renault is hoping it has a winner on its hands with the upcoming Renault 5 BEV, which the company says already has 50,000 orders on the waitlist just a few days after its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The new compact electric vehicle, which officially goes on sale in May in Europe, starts at €25,000, about $27,130, which is thousands of euros cheaper than most competitors. Built in Northern France, the retro-inspired vehicle is Renault’s first all-new small EV since the famous Zoe hit the scene in 2014. “We have a waiting list of 50,000 people,” Renault brand CEO Fabrice Cambolive told Automotive News Europe. “We will open orders in May, and we’ll start to deliver cars in September or October.” He also added that in 2023, 50% of Renault’s sales were retail and 50% were fleet, so he is expecting that 40% of Renault 5 sales will be fleet as well. The 5 E-Tech will become available in three different electric motor configurations, offering 70 kW, 90 kW, or 110 kW …

Constance Marten given nearly £50k before going on the run with baby | UK news

A fugitive aristocrat was given nearly £50,000 from her trust fund around the time she disappeared with her partner and newborn baby, a court has heard. Constance Marten was given £47,886 by bankers C. Hoare & Co between 1 September 2022 and 17 January 2023. A police appeal to find them was launched on 6 January last year. Marten and Mark Gordon went on the run with their daughter Victoria after their car burst into flames near Bolton, in Greater Manchester, last January. The Old Bailey has heard how they slept in a tent in their effort to keep the baby, after Marten’s four other children were taken into care. When the couple was arrested in Brighton, East Sussex, they initially refused to say where their child was or whether she was alive or dead. On 1 March, Victoria’s remains were found in a Lidl supermarket bag inside a disused shed on an allotment. The jury heard during evidence from the police financial investigator DC Steve Ferguson on Thursday that Marten drew a monthly allowance …

Disabled man who saved £50k from care fund for Florida trip has to give money back

Nathan Lee Davies, who has a degenerative illnes, said he had saved the money to have “a bit of respite from the mundane reality of everyday life” A disabled man who saved £50,000 from his round-the-clock care fund for a holiday to Florida with his carers has had the money “clawed back” by the council. Nathan Lee Davies, 47, receives direct payments of £11,000 a month from Wrexham County Borough Council to manage his care for Friedreich’s Ataxia, a progressive genetic disease of the nervous system. The payments include cinema tickets and trips to pubs and restaurants, which he decided to forgo and instead save the money for a six-day break to Florida “to have a bit of respite from the mundane reality of everyday life”. He saved £50,000 over a number of years, including during lockdown when cinemas and restaurants were closed, while providing the council with bank statements every quarter to show he was not misusing the money. But the council said “surplus funds are to be returned”, after they discovered he had …

Traders Fall Back In Love With Stocks & Bonds After Terrible-Tuesday, Bitcoin Breaks Above $50k

A quiet macro day allowed a post-VIXperation market room to do what it does best, ‘sell-vol, and bid stocks’ as the US majors did their best to erase yesterday’s ugliness and VIX puked back to a 14 handle. Because, well why not… love is in the air… VIX actually began to puke right after the cash close last night… The Nasdaq rallied back into the green post-CPI and the S&P 500 got close, Small Caps are still laggards but made up a lot of ground from Terrible Tuesday… ‘Most Shorted’ stocks recovered more than two-thirds of yesterday’s losses… Source: Bloomberg Magnificent 7 stocks rebounded but only modestly (only around 30% of the drop from Monday highs)… Source: Bloomberg Treasuries were bid today with the short-end outperforming (2Y -9bps, 30Y -2bps), recovering some of yesterday’s losses… Source: Bloomberg  Given the exuberance in bonds and stocks, we note that rate-cut expectations barely budged with June still the most likely timing for the first rate-cut…and the market is still pricing in less than 4 rate-cuts this year. Bitcoin hits $50k level for first time in more than two years

WASHINGTON/LONDON :Bitcoin hit the $50,000 level for the first time in more than two years as the world’s largest cryptocurrency was buoyed by expectations of interest rate cuts later this year and last month’s regulatory nod for U.S. exchange-traded funds designed to track its price. The cryptocurrency has risen 16.3 per cent so far this year, on Monday touching its highest since Dec. 27, 2021. At 12:56 p.m. EST (1756 GMT), bitcoin was up 4.96 per cent on the day at $49,899, having oscillated around the $50,000 level. “$50,000 is a significant milestone for bitcoin after the launch of spot ETFs last month not only failed to elicit a move above this key psychological level but led to a 20 per cent sell-off,” said Antoni Trenchev, co-founder of crypto lending platform Nexo. Crypto stocks also enjoyed a boost on Monday, with crypto exchange Coinbase up 4.9 per cent and crypto miners Riot Platforms and Marathon Digital up 10.8 per cent and 11.9 per cent, respectively.
