French swimmer Marchand wins gold with Olympic record in men’s 400-metre medley

France’s Léon Marchand won a gold medal and set an Olympic record in the men’s 400-metre individual medley at the Paris Games on Sunday, pulling away from his rivals as thousands of fans at La Defense Arena chanted his name. Issued on: 28/07/2024 – 21:47 3 min With a flag-waving crowd cheering his every stroke, Léon Marchand delivered a swimming gold for France with a dominating victory in the men’s 400-meter individual medley Sunday night. Marchand was ahead as soon as his head popped from the water and he steadily pulled away from the field in what was essentially two separate races: Marchand racing the clock and everyone else competing for silver and bronze. He was under world-record pace on the final turn but faded a bit coming home, touching in 4 minutes, 2.95 seconds — an Olympic record, but just shy of his own world mark of 4:02.50. Marchand claimed that mark at last year’s world championships in Fukuoka, Japan, erasing a record held by Michael Phelps for 15 years. Not surprisingly, the young …

Russian disinformation campaign targets Paris Games, Microsoft says

Russia is waging a “malign” disinformation campaign aimed at the Paris Olympics and French President Emmanuel Macron, Microsoft warned on Tuesday, accusations Moscow dismissed as “slander”.  Issued on: 03/06/2024 – 22:57 2 min Russia is waging an intense disinformation campaign aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the International Olympic Committee and stoking fears of violence at this summer’s Paris Games, according to a new report from Microsoft’s Threat Analysis Center. According to Microsoft, the influence operations utilise a potent mix of fake videos, fictitious news stories, and AI-generated impersonations, including the faked voice of Hollywood star Tom Cruise. “Russia is ramping up these malign campaigns against France, President (Emmanuel) Macron, the IOC, and the Paris Olympics,” said Clint Watts, general manager of the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center, in a blog post Sunday. “While Russia has a decades-long history of targeting the Olympic Games, the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center has observed old tactics blending with artificial intelligence… that may intensify as the 2024 Paris opening ceremony approaches,” he added. Prolific Russian influence actors tracked by Microsoft as Storm-1679 …

Some 10,000 people will have the honour of carrying the torch for part of its relay around the country, from ordinary citizens to VIPs. One of these torch bearers is a Paris-based, Sri Lankan-born baker who only came to France for the first time in 2006. Since then he has worked as a cook, then at a bakery, and now runs his own establishment. His baguettes are credited with being so good that they won the prize for the best Parisian baguette of 2023. Tharshan Selvarajah spoke to us in Perspective. Olympic flame sails into Marseille port, marking milestone on path to Paris Games

Tens of thousands of people gathered on Wednesday in the southern French city of Marseille to welcome the Olympic torch and mark another milestone in the lead-up to the Summer Games in Paris. Issued on: 08/05/2024 – 12:14 4 min A majestic three-mast ship carried the Olympic flame into Marseille’s famed Old Port at sunset as the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, echoed from the embankment. An Air Force fly-over marked the ship’s arrival, with planes drawing the five Olympic rings and then the red-blue-white colours of the French flag.  Tens of thousands cheered the arrival at the cordoned-off stage area on the shore, while thousands of others waved from balconies and windows overlooking the festivities. Marseille-born rapper Jul lit the Olympic cauldron after the torch was brought to land by Florent Manaudou, France’s 2012 Olympic men’s 50 metres freestyle swimming champion. Olympic flame to arrive in France ahead of Paris Olympics

Olympic flame to arrive in France ahead of Paris Olympics

The Olympic flame is set to arrive in the French port of Marseille on Wednesday in front of a crowd of up to 150,000 people in a first major test of the hugely ambitious plans for the Paris Games. Issued on: 07/05/2024 – 12:53Modified: 07/05/2024 – 14:46 4 min The transfer of the flame onshore from a 19th-century tall ship will mark the start of a 12,000-kilometre (7,500-mile) torch relay across mainland France and the country’s far-flung overseas territories. Organisers are hoping the first public spectacle of their much-hyped “iconic” Olympics — just 79 days away — will help build excitement after a damaging row about ticket prices and ongoing concerns about security. “It’s something we’ve been waiting for for a very long time,” chief organiser Tony Estanguet told reporters on Monday. “It’s here. One hundred years after the last Games, the Games are coming home.” When the Paris opening ceremony begins on July 26, it will be the first time the city has played host for a century after previous editions in 1924 and …

French MPs say ‘non’ to English at the Paris Olympics

French MPs say ‘non’ to English at the Paris Olympics

Having long battled the creeping use of English in advertising, music and film, French MPs have declared a new struggle: keeping their home Olympics this year free from anglicisms. Issued on: 03/05/2024 – 10:15 3 min In a resolution adopted on Thursday, the lower house of parliament urged organisers of the 2024 Paris Games, as well as athletes, trainers and journalists to use French as much as possible. Annie Genevard, the conservative sponsor of the resolution, expressed alarm to fellow MPs that “the Olympic Games reflect the loss of influence of our language.” She recalled the much-criticised slogan used for Paris’ original bid for the Games – “Made for Sharing” – as well as other recent government-backed campaigns to promote the country such as “Choose France” or “Made in France.” Even the French rugby team had “Rugby World Cup” inscribed on their jerseys during the competition in France last year instead of “La Coupe du Monde de rugby.” “All of these examples demonstrate that the fight for the French language … is never finished, even in the …

Paris suburbs get spanking new Olympic venues while teachers and pupils seethe in decrepit schools

Paris suburbs get spanking new Olympic venues while teachers and pupils seethe in decrepit schools

Teachers and parents in the north-eastern suburbs of Paris have staged several weeks of strikes and protests in the run-up to the Paris Olympics, leveraging the Games as they call for urgent measures to help struggling state schools in mainland France’s poorest region, home to many of the Olympics’ signature venues. Snaking her way through a maze of roadworks, Saint-Ouen resident Zora Cheikh is unimpressed with the vast resources that have been pumped into this suburb of Paris in the run-up to the Olympics.  Located on the northern edge of Paris, Saint-Ouen will host a large chunk of the Olympic Village this summer, part of huge infrastructure projects that officials have touted as a game-changing legacy for the Seine-Saint-Denis area, the poorest in mainland France.    Cheikh, however, is more concerned about the chronic teacher shortages that have stripped her children of hundreds of hours of learning throughout the academic year.  “When you see the money they’re pumping into the Olympics, which will last only a few weeks, it’s infuriating,” said the mother of five. “Our kids’ education, …

The adventures of the Belem, the historic French sailing ship bringing the Olympic flame to France

The adventures of the Belem, the historic French sailing ship bringing the Olympic flame to France

The mission of transporting the Olympic flame on the first leg of its journey to the opening ceremony in Paris was given to one of the France’s most venerable sailing ships, the Belem, built in 1896. Issued on: 27/04/2024 – 06:42Modified: 27/04/2024 – 10:36 3 min Between April 26 and May 8, the ship will sail the Mediterranean to bring the flame from Greece to Marseille, the start of the Olympic torch relay on French soil. It’s fair to say that the task of conveying the flame to France is only the latest of the ship’s adventures over the past 128 years. The Belem escaped disaster in 1902 during a massive volcanic eruption while at anchor off Saint Pierre, Martinique. While approaching the port of Yokohama, Japan, in 1923, the ship again avoided the worst when an earthquake destroyed much of the city. The Belem is a three-masted barque 58 metres long and 8.8 metres wide and carries 22 sails, the heaviest weighing 800 kg. Her main mast measures 34 metres above sea level. Maximum …
