Raphinha strike earns Barca 1-0 win over 10-man Las Palmas

BARCELONA, Spain :Second-placed Barcelona extended their unbeaten streak in LaLiga to nine games with a 1-0 win over Las Palmas on Saturday, courtesy of a second-half header by winger Raphinha, after the visitors were reduced to 10 men in the first half. Barcelona, who will face Paris St Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals next month, have now won seven of their last nine LaLiga outings to move onto 67 points from 30 games. They are five points behind Real Madrid and five above third-placed Girona, who host Athletic Bilbao and Real Betis, respectively, on Sunday. Xavi Hernandez’s side have kept five consecutive clean sheets in the competition for the first time since they managed six between August and October 2022. Barcelona forwards Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha were denied early goals for an offside in the build-up before the Brazilian found the net in the 59th minute, heading a superb cross by substitute Joao Felix into the top corner. Las Palmas went down to 10 men after 24 minutes when goalkeeper Alvaro Valles was sent …

Stuttering Chelsea held 2-2 at home by 10-man Burnley

Stuttering Chelsea held 2-2 at home by 10-man Burnley

LONDON :Chelsea suffered yet another setback in their erratic season when they were held to a 2-2 home draw on Saturday by 10-man, relegation-threatened Burnley who almost claimed all three points in the dying moments. Mauricio Pochettino’s expensively assembled but young side looked in the driving seat when Burnley’s Lorenz Assignon was shown a second yellow card for tangling with Mykhailo Mudryk and top scorer Cole Palmer netted the penalty in the 44th minute. Burnley manager Vincent Kompany was also shown a red card for protesting against the spot-kick decision. But Clarets’ captain Josh Cullen stunned Stamford Bridge by scoring two minutes into the second half with a shot off the outside of his boot from 20 metres. Chelsea struggled to make their numerical advantage count before they restored their lead in the 78th when Palmer netted again, this time with a low shot after collecting a neat back-heeled pass from substitute Raheem Sterling. Burnley refused to give up though and were level again three minutes later when Dara O’Shea’s powerful header from a corner …

Georgia one step closer to Euro 2024 after 2-0 win over 10-man Luxembourg

Georgia one step closer to Euro 2024 after 2-0 win over 10-man Luxembourg

TBILISI : Two goals from Budu Zivzivadze gave Georgia a 2-0 home win over Luxembourg in their Euro 2024 playoff semi-final on Thursday, when the visitors had a player sent off and a goal disallowed in controversial circumstances. Neither side has ever reached the finals of a major tournament and on a rainy night in Tbilisi it was Georgia who took a step closer. They will host one of Tuesday’s three playoff finals against either Greece or Kazakhstan, who play later on Thursday. Luxembourg were unable to get a foothold in the game early on as Georgia, backed by a noisy home crowd, kept possession and probed for a breakthrough, while the visitors failed to register a single shot on goal in the opening half. The first goal came five minutes before the break when a poor attempt at a headed clearance by Mathias Olesen from a corner fell to Zivzivadze who rifled his first-time shot from close range into the roof of the net. Luxembourg thought they had equalised in the 53rd minute through …

Hudson-Odoi stunner earns Forest draw at 10-man Bournemouth

:A fantastic strike from Callum Hudson-Odoi earned struggling Nottingham Forest a welcome point in a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday. Former Chelsea forward Hudson-Odoi scored with a curling shot from outside the box following a well-drilled Forest free-kick routine in first-half stoppage time to draw his side level after they fell behind to an early Bournemouth goal. Bournemouth started brightly, taking the lead from a Lloyd Kelly corner in the fifth minute, with Justin Kluivert firing the hosts in front from point-blank range after latching on to Luis Sinisterra’s knock on. Forest served the first notice of their attacking intentions five minutes after falling behind, when Taiwo Awoniyi was played through by Morgan Gibbs-White, but the Nigerian striker shot straight at Neto in the Bournemouth goal. The visitors grew into the match as the half wore on, with Ryan Yates shooting tamely straight at Neto from close range in the 24th minute after being picked out by Murillo following a deep free kick that sparked panic in the Bournemouth defence. …

YAMOUSSOUKRO :Senegal began their Africa Cup of Nations title defence with a 3-0 victory over 10-man Gambia helped by Lamine Camara’s double in Group C on Monday, bringing an end to a sequence of surprise results at the tournament in the Ivory Coast. After a shock-filled Sunday where the minnows had the upper hand over heavyweight opponents, Senegal restored faith in the form book as Pape Gueye scored early and Camara added two more to ensure victory in the opening Group C encounter. Gueye put Senegal ahead in the fourth minute at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium, while 20-year-old Camara, voted Young African Player of the Year in 2023, underlined his promise with a fine finish seven minutes after the break and a sublime second into the top corner four minutes from time. Gambia were reduced to 10 men when Ebou Adams was sent off for a needless stamp on Camara in stoppage time at the end of the first half, leaving Gambia on the back foot for the second period. But they were already …

Late Vlahovic goal earns Juventus narrow win at 10-man Salernitana

SALERNO, Italy :A stoppage-time header by Dusan Vlahovic helped Juventus come from behind to grab a 2-1 win at Salernitana in Serie A on Sunday after the hosts were reduced to 10 men early in the second half. The win allowed Juventus to keep pace with leaders Inter Milan in the title race as they reached the halfway mark in the campaign in second spot in the standings on 46 points. They are two points behind Inter, who beat lowly Verona 2-1 in a drama-filled clash on Saturday, and seven above third-placed AC Milan. “Let’s be realistic. We have the Inter team in front of us who are having an important championship,” coach Massimiliano Allegri told DAZN. “Winning in Salerno was important to maintain the distance from fifth place. We have a 14-point advantage, that means five games. That’s already a lot.” Vlahovic echoed the coach’s comments, stressing that a top-four finish is currently Juventus’ main focus. “Our goal is to get into the Champions League,” Vlahovic said. “Let’s move forward game by game, then …

Douglas Luiz’s late penalty gives Aston Villa win over 10-man Burnley | Premier League

Douglas Luiz’s late penalty gives Aston Villa win over 10-man Burnley | Premier League

Just as it appeared Burnley had ended their record as the last team in the Premier League to have gained a point from a losing position, controversy reared its ugly head once more as the referee, Stuart Attwell, awarded the softest of late penalties for Douglas Luiz to convert and so enable Aston Villa to return to winning ways. Four minutes of regulation time remained when Aaron Ramsey, the former Villa academy graduate, prepared to clear the ball from midway in his own penalty area. Unbeknown to the Burnley substitute, from over his shoulder appeared Jhon Duran who was only willing to go over the Burnley player’s leg to ground via the merest contact. Attwell pointed to the penalty spot and Douglas Luiz, adding to the drama by taking as long a time as possible to compose himself and test James Trafford’s nerve, eventually rattled the crossbar with a shot that only belatedly crossed the line. It was so harsh on Burnley who, despite having Sander Berge sent off early in the second half, had …

Kyogo Furuhashi edges vital Celtic win after 10-man Rangers refuse to lie down | Scottish Premiership

The latest momentum shift in this Scottish Premiership season comes at an opportune time for Brendan Rodgers. Rangers arrived at Celtic Park trailing their oldest foes by five points but holding two games in hand. They left disconsolate; Philippe Clement finally sampling defeat in his 17th match in charge. The further bad news for Clement is Celtic are likely to strengthen considerably in January. Celtic were not altogether convincing here and were given a fright by James Tavernier’s late free-kick. In this fixture, though, result is everything. Celtic simply had to find a way to halt a Rangers surge. During an opening half in which Rangers performed pretty well, Paulo Bernardo eased Celtic nerves. The visitors failed to clear a Luis Palma corner, with Bernardo meeting the loose ball before lashing home. Rangers were later to feel aggrieved over the non award of a penalty for a handball by Alistair Johnston but television pictures appeared to show an offside in the lead up to the incident. Leon Balogun of Rangers is shown a red card …
