Storm warning: 70mph gales to batter UK as Met Office issues yellow alert | Weather | News

New weather maps suggest 70mph gales are to batter parts of the UK this coming week, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning.

Newly obtained weather data from WX Charts shows particularly strong gusts of wind are set to sweep through much of Yorkshire through Sunday afternoon and evening.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for wind covering north, west and south Yorkshire from midday today.

A Met Office statement said: “Strong westerly winds may cause some difficult travel conditions on Sunday afternoon.

“Winds will strengthen during Sunday morning with gusts of 45-55 mph expected across parts of Yorkshire during the afternoon.

“A few places may experience gusts of up to 65 mph. Winds will ease into Sunday evening.”

The Met Office warning is scheduled to be in place until 5pm on Sunday evening.

The weather agency has also issued a weather warning for rain in northern Scotland, with the northwest coast set to be the worst affected area.

The Met Office warns: “Persistent rain will lead to difficult travel conditions and possible flooding in a few places.”

They added: “Rain will become persistent across parts of western Scotland during Sunday, continuing throughout Monday before easing later on Tuesday.

“70-100 mm of rain is likely to fall widely during this period, but possibly over 150 mm for some exposed hills and mountains. Rapid melting of lying snow will also contribute to any potential impacts.”

The warning is expected to remain in place until Tuesday evening and is set to impact Central, Tayside & Fife, Highlands & Eilean Siar and Strathclyde.

The Met Office forecast states: “Some rain in the north and west, heaviest and most persistent across western Scotland.

“Rain spreading from the southwest during Tuesday. Further rain on Wednesday England and Wales. Showery elsewhere.”
