Awards season is in full swing, and nearly every weekend, there’s a new best-dressed list, and a different trend comes into view. There was the vintage glamour of the swans of the SAG Awards 2024, the sea of red gowns at the Emmys 2024, the gleaming metallics of the Grammys. Women’s fashion typically dominates the discussion, while the men and their black tuxes—navy if they’re daring—fade into the background. Unless, that is, you’re Colman Domingo, this year’s undisputed king of red-carpet fashion.

Domingo, who has long been prolific across the stage and screens big and small, is nominated in the best-actor category at this year’s Oscars 2024 for his performance in Rustin. He’s also gotten attention for his impeccable tailoring and bold fashion choices, the result of his collaboration with stylist team Wayman and Micah. Speaking with Vanity Fair for our Hollywood Issue, Domingo called the recent attention on his style choices “the coolest thing.”

“We’ve always crafted story,” he said of his work with his style team, which also resulted in a monochrome neon pink three-piece suit at the Oscars 2021, among other memorable ensembles. “No matter how I was dressing—because I’m always dressing—people are noticing it more now. I usually thought that people went for the noisier, louder [outfits], wearing bells and whistles and everything. I’m a bit more understated—masculine cuts, tailoring. I love classic things that reference, like, Teddy Pendergrass. I love 1970s Italian cuts because I’m tall and lean. I have nice long legs. I like high-waisted [pants]. I like to feel sexy and playful. I like to look like a big flirt at all times. I flirt all day long.”

Even when Domingo does opt for a black tux, he does it differently, as he demonstrated at the Emmys, opting for a surprising longer jacket cut on his custom Louis Vuitton tux, pairing it with eye-catching accessories to spice things up. And then there are ensembles like Domingo’s silvery tweed Versace getup at the Independent Spirit Awards, topped off with a mercury-colored, flowing overcoat, a clear indicator he’s serious about style.
